Gazelle Population Now Poses
Problem for Israeli Farmers

HAIFA — The re-
population of Israel's
gazelle herds has led to a
conflict between farmers in
the Galilee and Golan
Heights regions and the
once-endangered animal,
according' to Haifa Univer-
sity psychologist and ani-
mal behavior specialist Dr.
Richard Schuster.
"Some kibutzim and
moshavim have literally
stopped planting in areas of
the Galilee where free-
running gazelles are strip-
ping the fields and destroy-
ing young trees," Dr. Schus-
ter said. Many settlements,

NEW YORK — The Na-
tional Foundation for
Jewish Culture has an-
nounced its 1984 Playw-
rights' Travel Grant Pro-
gram for non-profit theater
companies presenting pre-
mieres of plays with Jewish
themes.
The grant supports travel
expenses to allow the
playwright to work with the
theater company through
the rehearsal period of the
play. This program seeks to
provide an incentive for
theaters to produce new
plays dealing with Jewish
themes and for such plays to
enter into the general thea-
ter repertoire.

JERUSALEM (JNI) ---
The continuation of Hebrew
ulpan classes for children of
new immigrants has been
assured despite a new round
of budget cuts, following a
Feb. 5 meeting between Ab-
sorption and Education
Ministry representatives.
Immigrant children, who
accounted for 2,500 of last
year's 16,000 olim, will con-
tinue to be entitled to He-
brew lessons in regular
school classes and to special
tutorial lessons after school,
for the first three years after
their arrival in Israel.

The program will be a
two-year endeavor. The
fencing of the Golan slope
will keep the gazelles in a
well-defined area, permit-
ting Schuster to monitor the
depopulation and the Na-
ture Reserves Authority to
intervene if problems occur.

protect their investments
are violating the law by
poisoning and shooting th e
gazelles, according to Dr •
Schuster.
The most pressing prob
lem is on the slope of th e
Golan Heights, abov e
Kibutz Ein Gev, where th e
original 350 animals —
transplanted in 1970 —
took advantage of their pro
tected status, with
thousands now seen leaping
across the hills. They are
enjoying lunch at the far-
mers' expense — eschewing
grass for the always delici-
ous baby cucumbers, wheat,
and cotton plants," Dr.
Schuster explained.
When Israel captured
the Golan Heights in 1967
the gazelle was almost ex-
tinct. Dr. Schuster esti-
mates that in 1948 there
were only 500 gazelles in
the Galilee, the Jordan
Valley, and on the Golan,
but those were often kil-
led for sport or food. Un-
fortunately, the effort to
reintroduce the gazelle
into these areas may have
been too successful.
Dr. Schuster and the uni-
versity of Haifa are now
working with Israel's na-
ture reserves to alleviate
some of the problems by ar-
ranging to fence the Golan
slope — top and bottom —
allowing the gazelles an
ample amount of room to
run while at the same time
denying them access to the
fields.
