; THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Prof. Julius Weinberg Dies Prof. Julius Weinberg, former rabbi and educa- tional director of the Beth Israel Congregation in Ann Arbor and former faculty member at Wayne State University, died Feb. 8 at age 61. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Prof. Weinberg was profes- sor of American history at Cleveland State University at the time of his death. He was graduated from Case-Western Reserve University and ordained at the Mirrer Yeshiva in New York. He earned master's and doctoral degrees at the University of Michigan. He was a religious school administrator be- fore becoming director of the internal relations and culture commissions of the Jewish Community Council of Detroit from 1947 to 1953, when he ac- cepted the Beth Israel posts. While serving there until 1962, he began his academic teaching career. He taught at WSU and the State University of New Paltz, N.Y., before coming to Cleveland State University in 1965. The author of several publications, Dr. Weinberg was a founder, board member and officer of Jewish educational institu- tions in Cleveland: The Bureau of Jewish Educa- tion, Agnon School, the Cleveland Hebrew Schools, Akiva Hebrew High School and the College of Jewish Studies. He was a member of the community relations and Israel affairs committees of the Jewish Welfare Federa- tion, and of American Pro- fessors for Peace in the Mid- dle East. He taught in the high school of Park Synagogue and at the College of Jewish Studies, and was educa- tional director of Subur- ban Temple for six years. Prof. Weinberg is sur- vived by his wife, Alezah; three daughters, Dr. Naimah of Ann Arbor, Mrs. Yisrael (Roni) Ornan of Cleveland, and Mrs. Stuart (Shirah) Hecht of Chicago; a brother, Avner Wybranczyk of Tel Aviv, Israel; two sis- ters, Mrs. Bess Hirsch of Pittsburgh, and Mrs. Philip (Eve) Weltman of Oak Park; and one granddaughter. Mrs. Shepherd Frances M. Shepherd, administrative director of the Michigan Psychoanaly- tic Institute in Southfield, died Feb. 9 at age 55. A native Detroiter, Mrs. Shepherd was a member of Women's American ORT. She leaves two daughters, Dale and Mrs. Daniel (Wendy) Shepherd-Bates of Grand Rapids; her mother, Mrs. Dorothy Shankman of West Palm Beach, Fla.; a brother, Lawrence Shankman of Palm Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Mrs. Harold (Lucille) Simon and Mrs. Irving (Ruthe) Richie of Boca Raton, Fla.; and two granddaughters. RUTH ALLENDER, 83, former Detroiter of Los Angeles, Calif., died Feb. 11. She leaves a daughter, Mrs. Gloria Pearl of Los Angeles; eight grandchil- dren and five great-grand- children. * * * ROSE BERG, 61, died Feb. 15.
