The disclosure has prompted a further investi- gation into the wartime ac- tivities of Guillaume Meer- tens and a decision by the pension authority to sus- pend further payment pend- ing its outcome. Meertens, who lives in Spain, is be- lieved to have collected over one million Guilders to date. He may be forced to refund the amount if it is proven that he deliberately misled the pension fund. He is now awaiting trial for crimes against humanity. - Meertens was arrested by the Germans in the early days of the occupa- tion for anti-Nazi activi- ties. While in prison at Scheveningen he agreed to work for his captors. He was released and, for about a year thereafter, supplied Barbie with in- formation about Dutch resistance groups. After the war he appar- ently convinced the authorities that he had been a member of the resistance. * * * Collaborators Are Released PARIS (JTA) — Three French Nazi collaborators, whose death sentences were commuted to life imprison- ment by President Charles de Gaulle, have been re- leased after serving 20 year prison terms. The life sentences of Jean Barbier, Jacques Vasseur and Joseph Cortial were re- duced to 20 years by de Gaulle's successor, former President Georges Pom- pidou. A French Justice Ministry spokesman said that "after completing their sentences there was no possible reason to keep them in jail." Barbier, now 64, was sen- tenced to death in 1966 for having led the French Ges- tapo faction in Grenoble. He had also been a member of the Waffen SS and served on the Russian front during World War II. He was ar- rested in 1963 after hiding out for 17 years under a false name. He was released from prison last August. Vasseur and Cortial, also in their middle-60s, were originally sentenced to death for serving as Gestapo agents. As such, they ar- rested Jews and resistance fighters for deportation to death camps. Detroiter Tells Marriage Plans MR. AND MRS.
