OUT OF CHAOS • • • WHAT?
Devilish as the situation is, it may take
miracles to resolve them and prophets to offer
auguries of results of the horrors affecting
peoples in many areas in the world. Of major
interest to Israel and world Jewry is, of course,
the Middle East. Under different conditions
there could be the fear lest an embattled state,
surrounded by enemies, could survive. This is
not the case with the Jewish state because of the
confirmed declaration to Jewry itself and to the
world, in the words of the Psalmist, "I shall not
die but live . . . to declare the words of the Lord
Yet there is the recognition of an existing
chaos. It affects the diplomacy occasionally, the
religious challenges just as frequently, the eco-
nomic struggles always.
It is the collective chaos that continues to
confront the Jews in Israel and everywhere.
There is no predicting what will emerge
from the present crises, but one thing is certain:
that a collective effort is always needed to hold
heads high and minds alerted to whatever may
create obstacles.
There is chaos, but it is Jewish unity that
will count in the long run. Responding as an
entity, taking into account the many blessings
that come from Jewish acquisition of the right
to be masters of their own destiny, and at the
same time responding to evils inherent in the
many challenges, dangers can be succumbed.
In the unity that is so urgent, it is vital that
the cultural aspirations of Jewry be attained
and that the philanthropic obligations be lived
up to. In the current appeals to this community
by the Allied Jewish Campaign are massed the
needs of a united people, their duties to Israel
and causes at home as well as abroad.
In the interest of the much needed unity,
these obligations must be fulfilled. It is an im-
portant way of strengthening the life-providing
unity.
KREMLIN . • • UNCHANGED
The passing of Yuri Andropov has one ele-
ment of certainty: changes in Kremlin policies
can hardly be anticipated. There always is a
continuity in Soviet policies that affects rela-
tions with the United States, attitudes on mat-
ters of emigration, the antagonisms that seem
to have been perpetrated toward Israel and the
Jewish people.
Yet, there have been some changes after
the Stalin era, and while Khrushchev and
Brezhnev pursued Communist policies there
were often amending procedures.
Under Andropov there was a virtual clos-
ing of doors to Jews and others seeking emigra-
tion, especially for- the Jewish applicants for
exit visas.
Are changes to be anticipated? Is it possible
that alteration is in the making under the new
leadership?
While the power struggle is unending, it is
hardly possible that tensions will ease quickly.
Perhaps there will be a relenting in the emigra-
tion attitudes. In the years ahead, under the
new USSR leadership, there will be much to be
learned by the United States, Israel and the
world at large.
Under Konstantin Chernenko many puz-
zles could be solved and unpleasantness will
hopefully be obviated. "Hope springs eternally

bigotries on many fronts.
Dr. Sheila Lampert, part-time faculty member of Macomb
County Community College, who is in her second year of community
service as president of the Zionist Federation of Detroit, has compiled
the libels and responds to them in a book just issued here.
Nearly every conceivable distortion is tackled by the Zionist
leader and academician. Under the title "What Do You Say to a
Naked Libel . ." (Lad Press, Berkley, Mich.), Dr. Lampert offers
guidelines for defenders of truth. For an appreciation of her scholarly
approaches, an exemplary page in her book provides the necessary
answer. On "History versus Hysteria" she wrote:

Since WWI
While more than five million miles went to Arab
hands, less than 1 percent became Jewish National Home Lands.
1920 1922
To those 46,000 miles — placed in British care —
Came Abdullah of Arabia, their choice to rule there.
1922
They gave him 35,000 miles of Jewish land to use. Then
stood by while he made it "off-limits" to the Jews! (And his grandson
King Hussein still keeps "Judenrein" their Kingdom of Jordan in
East Palestine).
1947
For the 11,000 miles remaining — some 23 percent — a
U.S. partition plan, to further their intent. That another Arab plus a
Jewish state be made there leaving Jews with one-tenth of their one
percent share.
May 1948 Were the Arabs overjoyed? Were they even content?
No. They invaded day-old Israel to express their dissent. But by losing
war after war, they helped Israel grow to 11,000 miles with the "West
Bank" in tow.
Today
Now Israel has one-fourth of the Jewish one percent.
Yet daily we hear greedy Arabs lament, they wail and they whine and
they set forth demands, that Arabs get all of the Jewish Home Lands!

Among the many topics and issues covered in the book are "Mid-
dle East Myths," " 'Legitimate' Racist Claims," "The Jordan Connec-
tion," "Unfounded Accusations," "The Real Tragedy: the Refugee
Camps," "Side by Side with the PLO," "Helping Humanity: Arab
Style," "Helping Humanity: Soviet Style," "Hide the Truth and Seek a
Target" and others. •
Another effective item in the Lampert book, properly labeled
"Legitimacy," additionally emphasizes the importance of her book.
In all instances, Dr. Lampert utilizes Scriptural references, with
resort to several biblical quotations to indicate the justice of the
Jewish cause.
The book is illustrated by Chana Drissman.
"Chapter and Verse on the Middle East" is an appropriate subti-
tle to this valuable guide book serving as an impressive instrument to
fight the prejudices now extant.
