Chocolates . . . They're
creating a sensation.
GEORGE WASHING-
TON'S birthday this Mon-
day has Kingsley Inn
featuring cherries galore on
their menu, highlighted by
"Cannot Tell A Lie Cherry
Pie" at 50 cents a slice or $1
a la mode.
YESTERDAY'S
CLASSIC Oldies Club in
the Sheraton - Southfield
Hotel on W. Nine Mile has
The Tokens, national re-
cording act, for one week
this Monday through
Saturday.
ARMANDO'S Mexican
Restaurant on W. Vernor
near 1-75 at Clarkdale has
obtained the services of
Mexico City's top Spanish
guitarist . . . Raul Puente
. . . playing romantic Latin
tunes for listening ... as
well as upbeat, rhythm
ic
numbers for dancing .. .
Raul and his Spanish guitar
are Wednesday through
Sunday, 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.
DIM SUM, the Chinese
equivalent of brunch, is
usually served between 11
a.m. and 4 p.m. . . . When
folks enter restaurants
for dim sum, they
don't receive a menu, but
waiters and waitresses
weave amid the table,
wheeling carts laden with
small hors d'oeuvres .. .
meat-filled pastries, shrimp
balls, stuffed green peppers
and other delights that defy
description . . . You order by
pointing to whatever appe-
als to you on the cart.
This is not the case, how-
ever, at Hoa Kow Inn on
Nine Mile, west of Coolidge
. . as it now prepares oodles
of dim sum delights to go
along with Oriental fare
better than ever before .. .
and Hoa Kow has always
been good ... since opening
in Oak Park 29 years ago.
The dim sum items at Hoa
Kow are made not just as
brunch delicacies . . . but for
all meals at all hours . . . by
Diane Woo, owner Gene's
mother and father Dan's
wife ... and Gene's wife,
Ruby Woo . . . They prepare
them with 24 hours notice
. . . about 12 different kinds
. . Altogether, there are
about 24 various dim sum
items.
While there recently,
six of us had tulip-shaped
flowers filled with chop-
ped chicken, a delicious
shrimp and chopped
meat delicacy, tiny chic-
ken breasts wrapped in
tin foil and Chinese
meatballs with
watercress bottoms ...
all preceded by Hoa
Kow's famed shrimp
toast.
Then came sizzling rice
soup, See Dil Chow Mi
(boiled rice noodles with
black" bean sauce, shrimp,
bean sprouts, etc.), a very
tasty Szechuan chicken sur-
rounded by rarely seen puf-
fed rice noodles . . . and tea
with almond cookies Hoa
Kow makes itself . . . with-
out lard.
Those who've taken Hoa
Kow for granted all these
years are in for a treat . . . It
is now more than just a very
good place to go for Chinese
111/'
food . . . Hoa Kow is a new
experience.
