▪ THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, February 11, 1984 33 Danny Raskin's I The Best of Everything) a THERE'S A NEW LOOK in food now at Ginopolis, Middlebelt and 12 Mile . . . as tablecloths and cloth napkins grace the very well-built and beauti- ful standing memorial to George Ginopolis, late father of owners John and Pete Ginopolis. The biggest seller isn't pizza, ribs or spaghetti anymore . . . it's shrimp scampi on fettucini Alfredo (large scampi sauteed with garlic butter and wine, served on the delicious creamed noodles) . . . And the new revised menu now also includes steak Diane (filets of choice tenderloin beef, sauteed with scallions, mushrooms and brandy), chicken a la Kline (named after Chef Bill Kline — chicken with sauteed on- ions, fresh mushrooms and green peppers in Marsala wine). Also, escargot appetizer, surf and turf, shrimps mar- tini (shrimp cocktail on crushed ice with dry Ver- mouth) . . . and so much more . . . under supervision of Sherrie Beals, formerly with Restaurant Duglass, Golden Mushroom and Truffles. Now that the action- packed Ginopolis has reached a peak of to- getherness fun, nice guys Johnny and Pete, who do so much for people . . . and are probably among the best-liked fellows around . . . made the well-received menu changeover. January was first an- niversary of the new Ginopolis edifice . . . tables in center, padded booths-on one side with curtains be- tween . . . and other side with large padded booths . . . wide expanse . . . over- hangs of antique-like lamp shades, large dance floor with mirrored ceiling and big seven-bulbed chandelier plus large bulbs on poles four-cornering the floor. Doors- with etched glass, dark heavy beams with brass, curved brass on bot- toms of four island tables, so much etched wood . . . the huge bar with its brass foot rail . . . and "George Ginopolis" in gold so nobody will ever forget his sacred memory . . . Isn't it nice that Johnny and Pete have made so very sure of this? The very polite waiters and waitresses are now all in tux shirts and black bow ties . . . Such very congenial people like evening hostess Beverly McDowell and day manager Ernie Palumbo .. . My waiter while having the delicious shrimp scampi on fettucini Alfredo was Ralph Bassett, an efficient and polite young gentleman. A new private banquet room now holds up to 130 people ... and is already a place people hope to see on their invitation. The Sunday brunch, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. with its 39 items and 18 hot dishes, has be- come a favorite of many. "Ginopolis Dance Con- test" has already begun .. sponsored by Jax Kai- Wash . . . Contestants must regis- ter at the restaurant after 5 p.m. for Feb. 20, 27, March 5, 12 and 19 . . . Semi-finals are March 26 and finals April 2, with celebrity judges . . . Grand prize win- ners get trip to Acapulco, second prize is chauffered limousine to Raphael's gourmet room in Sheraton-Oaks, and third prize is champagne dinner at Ginopolis. Ginopolis is open seven days a week . . . very clean . . . a place where per- sonalities from worlds of show biz, sports and media like to go . . . The emphasis is on customer-pleasing .. Johnny and Pete have done the kind of job you'd expect ... and they've certainly made a lot of people even more proud of them. URSULA WALKER and Buddy Budson, hus- band and wife team, re- turned to the Caucus Club on Congress (Penobscot Bldg.) through Feb. 25. IT'S A BIG HOME in Huntington Woods . . . a place where you'd ordinar- ily look to see family life .. To coin an expression from Jackie Gleason, "How sweet it is!" Instead, this is where those delicious, delectable, delovely Gayle's Chocolates are being made . . . for now . . . and gaining such a huge reputation. Gayle Steinhardt is the gal behind the 16 different kinds of chocolate truffles being made in a basement . . . and sold by all J. L. Hud- son stores, Merchant of Vino, Chocolatissimo, Jacobson's, Nutcracker Sweet, Palate Pleaser, etc. .. plus places in Chicago, C . leveland and Buffalo, Making candy started out as a sort of hobby for Gayle ... She's been at it full-time four years . . . making only truffles .. with all-natural ingre- dients and top-quality chocolate. With the help of a couple of em- ployees, Gayle melts the chocolate in machines for different flavors . . . dark, white and milk chocolate . A large cooler room contains boxes and boxes filled with a chocaholic's dream. Plus the boxes of truffles, Gayle makes chocolate - covered roses (white and brown) with stems, truffles for spreads on cookies at Bar Mitzva (a big rage), choco- late records with names of person being Bar or Bat Mitzva, business cards .. . even a push button-look telephone made of choco- late. Custom work is very big with Gayle Steinhardt and her Gayle's Chocolates .. . for any occasion . . . any motif ... All are solid choco- late throughout . . . some made with various liqueur flavors (amaretto, kahlua, brandy, rum, etc.) . . . And Gayle's employees are ar- tists, too . . . They make solid chocolate baskets . . also filled with (what else?) solid chocolate truffles. Bulk of her business are the boxes and boxes and boxes of chocolate truffles . . . hand-dipped at a rate of 400 an hour . . . There's custom-made candy bars, too . . . Imagine . . . sending someone a large truffle candy bar . . . but then again, it's not so strange when you think of the roses Gayle makes out of truffles . . . or those business cards and telephones . . . There's not a thing Gayle can't make out of pure, solid chocolate truffles. It's a home . . . but al- ready too small for Gayle's (Continued on Page 35) Famous on Friday Prime Rib Dinner "Special Cut" '14" per couple Includes: Potato du Jour, Salad, Relishes, Bread Basket ...every Friday!
