By BEN GALLOB

NEW YORK — The grow-
ing demand for Yiddish
texts for use in the
classroom is being met by
the National Yiddish Book
Center, located in Amherst,
Mass., according to Aaron
Lansky, the center's direc-
tor.
Lansky, who founded the
center in 1981, reported
that courses in Yiddish lan-
guage and literature are
now offered at more than 60
universities throughout
North America.
The three years of effort,
he asserted, had resulted in
saving more than 150,000
Yiddish books from destruc-
tion, adding that currently
Yiddish books "are shipped
to our school house at a rate
of more than 1,000 per
week." He said that the
book center had distributed
volumes in Yiddish "to stu-
dents, scholars and libraries
in 20 countries on five con-
tinents."
Commenting that Yid-
dish survived the murder
of countless writers and
the burning of millions of
books during the
Holocaust "and the mass
murder of leading Yid-
dish writers in 1952 by

ADL Will Aid
Christian Youth

NEW YORK — The
European office of the
Anti-Defamation League of
Bnai Brith will develop
human relations programs
for student Christian
movements that are con-
stituents of the European
branch of the World Student
Christian Federation.
The agreement, under
which ADL resources would
be utilized to create pro-
grams in such subject areas
as education, theology,
women's issues and inter-
national cooperation, is a
result of ADL participation
in a recent week-long lead- ,
ership training seminar
held by the federation in
Strasbourg.
Shimon Samuels, ADL's
Paris-based European di-
rector, conducted a two-day
session on combating ra-
cism.

Israel Opposed
on Conventions

WASHINGTON — The
International Aeronautical
Federation is having prob-
lems selecting a site for its
1985 space congress meet-
ing. Both Israel and East
Germany have submitted
bids for the meeting, but the
Soviet Union said it would
not support Israel and the
U.S. said it would ahve re-
duced participation if East
Germany is selected.
A decision is expected in a
few weeks, according to
Aviation Week and Space
Technology magazine.
Meanwhile, the Interna-
tional Federation of Air
Line Pilots Associations has
been receiving complaints
from some countries be-
cause it wants to hold its
next genral conference in
Israel.

the Stalin regime,"
Lansky warned that Yid-
dish now faces "utter ex-
tinction, through neglect,
through disuse and
through a sense it is no
longer relevant."
Lansky has appealed for
help to enable the book cen=

ter program to achieve five
objectives; to assure the
permanent preservation
and accessibility of Yiddish
literature by establishing
comprehensive collections
in major universities and
research libraries around
the world; to continue a suc-

cessful collection program;
to expand the center's book
distribution program; to de-
velop study guides; and to
sponsor a wide range of cul-
tural and educational . pro-
grams for students in Yid-
