Glaucoma is a leading
cause of blindness in the
United States and open-
angle glaucoma accounts
for 50 to 80 percent of the
estimated two million
glaucoma cases in this
country. Surveys have
shown that about half the
people with documented
cases of open-angle
glaucoma had been un-
aware of their condition
prior to an eye examina-
tion.
Up to about five years
ago, eye drops were the only
non-surgical treatment for
open-angle glaucoma, but
since 1979, argon laser tra-
beculoplasty has been used
successfully in many cases
of severe glaucoma.
This procedure is per-
formed on an outpatient
basis, with a topical anes-
thetic. It involves burning
many tiny spots on the
drainage portion of the eye,
known as the trabecular

Israel's Christian Embassy
Offers Respite from Politics

By MILLIE DONBROW

World Zionist Press Service
JERUSALEM — A few
weeks ago I walked into the
first International Chris-
tian Embassy in Israel, an
embassy that is not affected
by the vagaries of politics.
When the Jerusalem Bill
declaring undivided
Jerusalem Israel's capital
was passed, those embassies
that were housed in the city
were given (holy?) orders
from their governments to
leave at once as a protest.
Well, they moved out, no
doubt at considerable in-
convenience but Jerusalem
stayed put.
Embassies may come and
embassies may go, but some
things go on forever. A
thousand people of good
will, Christians represent-
ing 23 different nations,
marched, not with lethal
weapons or bombs or
screams of hate, but with
music into the holy city. It
was just after Sukkot. They
came to declare their sol-
idarity with the state.
Jerusalem's Mayor Teddy

Kollek opened the Chris-
tian Embassy with the
words: "There is only one
Jerusalem — ours and
yours." And this is what
their spiritual leader Jan
Van Der Hoeven thinks
about the hue and cry the
world raised over
Jerusalem:
"Since Israel took con-
trol of this city, the rights
of the three religious
groups, Jews, Christians
and Moslems, have been
respected. To make a call
for a change in the pre-
sent situation, implying
that there is not already
this respect granted and
guaranteed by Israel, is a
deceptive insinuation
that is contrary to the
truth.
"In hardly any time in
Jerusalem's recent history
has such freedom of worship
been experienced. Why is
this not honestly admitted
when nations or religious
bodies call for respect of all
religious groups in an ar-
rangement of Jerusalem's
situation?"
