SELECT WINES & LIQUORS • OPEN 7 DAYS military command had not yet awakened to the fact that nothing less than the destruction of Lebanon — now openly advocated by one of the Muslim chief- tains, Walid Jumblatt — would satisfy the Arab League and its satraps. The dream of the Arab League of a nation of Islam with no remaining Christian or Jewish oases in the midst hovered over the military strategy of Lebanon's enemies. A few years ago, it was customary for fellow- travelers of the Communist line and apologists for PLO terrorism (frequently the same persons) to hold up the model of a pluralistic, democratic Lebanon in con- trast to "Zionist" Israel. But there was no intention then, and there is no intention now, to tolerate Christian and Jewish "islands" in the Muslim sea, any more than there is an intention to change the laws under which, in all but two coun- tries of the Arab League, to convert from Islam to an- other religion is punishable by death. The practical program to destroy Lebanon was launched following the Yom Kippur War of 1973. Syria had never recog- nized the existence of an independent Lebanon in any case, and had never sent an ambassador to Beirut. Lebanon was conceived as a province of "Greater Syria." In the rattlesnake attack on Israel in 1973, the Lebanese military corn- niand refused to join in and close the ring. The Lebanese civil and military leaders had, by and large, imitated ' the inflamed rhetoric of other rulers in countries surrounding Israel; but common sense prevailed in the military showdown. Israel did not have to de- fend its northern border, and again was victorious against enormous odds. The propaganda campaign against the Lebanese mili- tary, stressing the claim that it was unfairly con- trolled by Christian officers, was then greatly increased. But the real offense was that command's refusal to join the jihad against Israel. In 1975-1976, the Syrian army invaded Lebanon, during a civil war induced by PLO disloyalists who had been given refuge in that country when Hussein of Jordan drove out those he didn't kill in September of 1970. They had tried to as- sassinate him and over- throw his regime. The Lebanese gave the Palestinians refuge, and the PLO turned around and established a state within a state. With the Syrian invasion, and the hookup with the PLO, Major Haddad and his men broke away from the central military com- mand, still controlled by a government that was trying to negotiate a set- tlement acceptable to movielist ings BERKLEY THEATRE 2990 W. 12 Mile Rd. "We estimate that the number of homeless Jews (in New York) is between 1,000 to 1,200." Rabbi David Cohen, executive di- rector of the Metropolitan New York Coordinating Council on Jewish Poverty, said. Cohen addressed a sym- posium on "Homelessness in New York City" at Cong. Shearith Israel (Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue). Cohen said that the homeless people . repre- sent a cross-section of the population. He said that they are equally divided between males and females, ranging in age from infants to senior citizens. In some cases, the homeless are entire families, parents and their children. He said that many of the homeless are educated indi- viduals with high school diplomas and college de- grees. He said that the homeless are victims of un- employment, "inflated housing market" and lack of ability and knowledge about which welfare agen- cies to turn to for assistance. David Liederman, associ- ate executive director for the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies, said that the federation's Homeless Project, launched last March, has served more than 500 homeless with the help of other federation- supported agencies. A re- cent survey of nearly 450 persons served by the feder- ation's Homeless Project re- vealed the following facts on homeless Jews: • Families with children make up 34 percent of the homeless. • The majority of the homeless families — about 52 percent — are headed by a single parent. • More than half of the homeless adults have a high school diploma, while a few have college and graduate degrees. • Fifty-six percent are be- tween the ages of 21 and 50. 12th Place JERUSALEM (JNI) — Israel recently placed 12th in a popularity poll of the most desirable countries in which to live, conducted by the British weekly "The Economist."
