THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 'Invitation to an Inquest' Available in Paperback Danny Raskin's The Best of Everything FRONT PAGE ARTI- CLE in Detroit News about Chinese New Year had her listed as "Barbara" King .. . and so this very gracious, extremely warm person wore a name tag at Chinese New Year Party given in Southfield home of Elizabeth Chiu King and hubby Albert . . . that read, "Barbara or Elizabeth King." This is the kind of lady she is . . . and why so many people enjoy her company. There were about 60 people to celebrate 4682, Year Of The Rat . . . enjoy- ing a very interesting eve- ning of Chinese dining and culture. On the Kings' bar were liquors, wines . . . and glasses of Lichee Am- brosia (eggnog with lichee nuts) . . . Guests wrapped their own un- fried egg rolls ... in paper-thin Chinese pan- cakes or see-through egg crepes . . . with fillings of fresh lettuce, beef, vege- tables and stir-fried finely-sliced meat ... (like a Chinese taco) ... Then there was the Soup Bar, hot and spicy, or a Chinese New Year spe- cial called the Happy Family Entrees were from "The four corners of China" .. . The East: Baroque Pearls (meat balls with water chestnuts, rolled in glutinuous rice and deli- cately steamed) . . . The South: Golden Phoenix (chicken with shiitaki mushrooms, delicately braised) . . . Vegetables were called "The 18 Immor- tals," combining various kinds of mushrooms, tofu products and fresh vegeta- bles (18 in all) . . . Also "The Four Seasons" (fresh veget- ables stir-fry) . . . and Rice, Pasta and Bread included . . . The Staple (steamed white rice), Festive Rice (rice flavored with Chinese sausage, black mushrooms and green peas), Sesame Pasta (Chinese flat noodles, highlighted with sesame oil and sesame seeds), and Flower Rolls (steamed bread from Shantung). For dessert were selec- tions of Snowballs (steamed rice balls with sweet bean paste and coconut flakes), Almond Delight (almond pudding with fresh fruit puree), Fried Fruit Assort- ment (pears, apricots, olives, etc.) and Golden Mandarins (Chinese symbol for prosperity) . . . Two types of tea . . . Jasmine Blossoms and Keemun Leaves. Elizabeth did all the cook- ing herself . . . and it couldn't have been done by too many better . . . She is author of "Eating The Chinese Way In Detroit," lecturer and consultant in Chinese culinary art, and presently teaching "New American Cuisine: The Chinese Way" at Oakland Community College . . . which was introduced at the King's Chinese New Year party. The "New American Cooking: The Chinese Way," says Elizabeth, is a marriage between the finest and the best of the cooking traditions of both worlds . . . Funda- mentals of cutting, marinating and tenderiz- ing, so integral in Chinese cuisine, are applied to the American kitchen. Fresh produce and meats, readily available in local markets, are combined with basic Chinese spices and ingredients to create a whole new world of de- licious, nutritious and easy-to-make recipes. This is a new approach to cooking, eating and entertaining." Noboby left without package of pennies for good luck . . . and a Chinese zodiac book written by Elizabeth with calligraphy by Grace Yu . . . It was such an enjoyable evening by a most magnificent hostess . . . Len and Ellen Barnes back from Israel and Egypt . . . His story in March issue of AAA Motor News will tell of their travels there .. . with front cover a picture of the Western Wall in Jerusalem. Sharon Dargay, doing such a fine job during illness of Jackie Klein at South- field Eccentric, giving up on using chopsticks and get- ting fork instead (so many people anxiously awaiting Jackie's return to her desk) . . . Jack and Carole McCar- thy gumming the delicious- ness of everything . . . Shir- lee and Jack Iden to celeb- rate 35 years of marriage, Feb. 23 . . . Bob Levine pick- ing eyes and cheeks from pickerel. Mary and Frank Stella a lovely couple . . . also Ar- mand Gebert and wife Eleanor Breitmeyer, both of Detroit News. The entire party was a fine show . . . but still an- other added attraction ... Two chefs from Moun- tain King restaurant in Troy setting up a per- formance where one of them makes thin noodles by hand . . . seemingly kneading and tossing the dough ... Magic for sure . .. but the real thing . no Henning or Copper- field illusion! And for certain everybody got a tangerine before they left . . . to put under their pillows for good luck . . . the more leaves the better. May good luck and good fortune come to Elizabeth Chiu King and her husband Albert. NANCY GURWIN and Phil Marcus Esser will be together again . . . first time in seven years ... when original cast appears in a revival of "I Do! I Do!" at Botsford Inn opening April 26 . . . They were at Botsford 41/2 months, seven years ago (Continued on Page 36) Friday, February 10, 1984 35 "Invitation to an In- quest," the 1965 study of the Rosenberg case by Walter and Miriam Schneir which was updated with three new chapters last year, has been issued in paperback by Pantheon Books. The 522-page volume chronicles the events lead- ing up to the arrest of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg for treason in 1950. The couple was charged with selling "atomic secrets" to the Rus- sians after World War II. The Schneirs present a detailed analysis of the con- troversial trial, which took place during the McCarthy era. The subsequent verdict of guilt and the June 19, 1953 execution of the Rosenbergs has been the subject of debate for more than 30 years. The three new chapters in this edition include material from the long- secret Federal Bureau of Investigation files on the case. The material was made public in 1982 via the Freedom of Informa- tion Act. Walter Schneir is a free- lance writer whose work has appeared in The Nation and the New York Times Magazine. Miriam, his wife, has edited several books, in- cluding "Feminism: The Es- sential Historical Writ- ings." The Best. The Biggest. ME BRUNCH.
