Rabbi Richard Birnholz of Beth Israel Congregation in Jackson, Miss., and adjunct professor -of religion at Millsaps College, will be the guest speaker. He will speak on "Beating the New Band of Missionaries at Their Own Game." Rabbi Birnholz contrib- utes to Sh'ma magazine and The Jewish Digest. He is presently working on a book of "Jewish Assertiveness Training" and an educa- tional game called "Jewish Survival." Rabbi Birnholz lec- tures extensively to youth and college organ- izations. HIAS Honored NEW YORK —HIAS was among the recipients of the first Annual Excellence Award presented by the Facts' About Cuban Exiles organization. In addition to HIAS, six other organizations were honored for their role in as- sisting Cuban refugees. Dr. Wachs Guest Speaker for Encounter Weekend Dr. Saul P. Wachs will be the guest speaker for Adat Shalom Synagogue's Encounter Weekend to be observed today and Satur- day. Dr. Wachs has graduate degrees in education, Jewish education and Jewish music from Temple University, the Jewish Theological Seminary and Ohio State University. He currently is chairman of the department of education at Gratz College and a na- tional consultant for the United Synagogue Com- mission on Jewish Educa- tion. The weekend's program will include an experiential activity relating to memories, attitudes, and problems connected to prayer: a talk on "The Dig- nity of Words" and a sheiur (learning session) entitled, "Discovering the Shema." College to Hear Jackson Rabbi Rabbi Irwin Tanenbaum of Temple Beth Israel, Jackson, will deliver a lec- ture on "Asher Lev" at Spring Arbor College, Sp-ring Arbor, Mich., on Feb. 21. Rabbi Tanenbaum was ordained at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in 1975, receiving a Master of Arts in Hebrew Letters degree while in attendance. He has also studied at the Hayim Greenberg Institute in Jerusalem and the Inter- faith Metropolitan Theolog- ical Seminary in Washing- ton, D.C. He is the second vice president of Family Service and Children's Aid of Jackson County as well as pastoral consultant for the Michigan Department of Corrections. He lectures on college campuses under the au- spices of the Jewish Chautauqua Society, the educational project of the National Federation of Temple Brotherhoods.
