Mitterrand, Saudi King Meet
to Discuss Middle East

PARIS (JTA) — King
Fand of Saudi Arabia and
President Francois Mitter-
rand met last weekend for
what reportedly was a "joint
effort" to find a solution to
the Middle East crisis.
France is known to sup-
port the Saudi Fez plan
which calls for negotiations
with the Palestine Libera-
tion Organization in ex-
change for indirect recogni-
tion of Israel by the Arab
states. The Fez plan was
adopted at an Arab summit
conference in Morocco in
1982 shortly after President

Reagan announced his
Mideast peace initiative.
It was generally believed
that Fand would ask France
to adopt a more balanced
stance in Lebanon, namely
to stop supporting the gov-
ernment of President Amin
Gemayel and favor a corn-
promise solution between
Gemayel and Syria, the
Moslems and the Druze.
The Saudis want to end the
fighting in Lebanon and to
obtain a withdrawal of all
Israeli forces.
They are reportedly
backed by Egypt and
Jordan, and would like
France, the current
chairman of the Euro-
pean Economic Commu-
nity's Council of Minis-
ters, to launch a diploma-
tic initiative in favor of
the Fez plan.
In Washington, the State
Department expressed
skepticism that Saudi
Arabia last week had called
for the withdrawal of U.S.
marines from Lebanon in a
statement attributed to
Saudi Crown Prince Ab-
dulla Ibn Abdulaziz.
That is certainly not what
Crown Prince Abdulla said
in his Jan. 29 meeting with
American visitors to Saudi
Arabia," according to State
Department Deputy
Spokesman Alan Romberg.
The U.S. Marines were
given orders by President
Reagan this week to rede-
ploy from the Beirut airport
to ships off the coast of
Lebanon.
Meanwhile, the official
Saudi news agency, SPA,
quoted Abdulla as saying,
"A withdrawal of all invad-
ing forces, Israeli and
American troops as well
(from Lebanon) will have to
be carried out as soon as
possible. There is not the
least doubt that Syrian
forces will pull out after
that."

Accidents Kill
Israeli Pilot,
Reserve Soldier

TEL AVIV (JTA) — An
Israeli pilot was killed when
his plane crashed while on a
training flight over the
Israeli-Egyptian border in
the Negev Sunday.
The search for the wrec-
kage was a combined opera-
tion by Israeli, Egyptian
and multinational forces in
Sinai. The wrecked plane
and the body of the pilot
were found by the Egyp-
tians some six miles west of
Nitznana, in Egyptian
territory. The body was re-
turned by the Egyptians to
the Israel Defense Force in a
full military ceremony
Monday.
Last week, a reserve
soldier was killed in a cable
car accident on Mount
Hermon when a cable being
installed on a new lift broke
away from its mounting and
began to swing about
wildly, the army said. The
new cable -car is not yet in
operation but is being built
for the army by an Austrian
firm.
