A personal account of life
in Nazi-occupied Holland
during World War II is de-
tailed in "An Interrupted
Life: The Diaries of Etty
Hillesum" (Pantheon).
Miss Hillesum, then a
carefree, 27-year-old, re-
corded her thoughts and
feelings in a series of exer-
cise books beginning in
1941. Her diary broke off in
September 1943 as she is
deported to Auschwitz,
where she eventually died.
As the account opens,
Miss Hillesum is living in a
communal household in
Amsterdam, bicycling all
over the country, studying
psychology and literature.
The fact that she is a Jew
living and working in a
country that is facing the
impending horror of the
Holocaust, provides a startl-
ing contrast to her efforts to
live a normal life.
Slowly during the two
years of the diary, Miss
Hillesum changes; as the
difficulties and tragedies
take hold on her psyche.
At first, there are petty
restrictions, such as Jews
no longer being permit-
ted to ride bicycles. Then,
there is the increasing
isolation of Jews as they
lose their jobs and are
denied the right to travel,
even locally. Finally,
there is the deportation
to the camps.
"An Interrupted Life" has
been translated from the
original Dutch edition by
Arno Pomerans. The book
features an introduction by
J. G. Gaarlandt.
