Based on voting records, public statements, and ac- cessibility by the Jewish community one can usually make an informed judg- ment about a Representa- tive or Senator's attitudes toward Israel. Fortunately, there are not that many who are un- friendly or unresponsive to arguments that a secure Is- rael serves U.S. interests. But there have been some clear choices between a friend and a non-friend in past elections. At present, candidates such as Senator Charles Percy in Illinois and Sen- ator Gordon Humphrey in New Hampshire — both in hotly contested races — are seeking Jewish support. Based on their own records, and just as important, their probable opponents' ex- cellent records, such support is not deserved. Belief in redemption is a traditional Jewish value, but in an election year, past deeds should speak louder than present words.
