was physically exception-
ally strong; besides, he not
only liked walking but was
also very good at swimming
and rowing and in his
younger days he practiced
fencing. He was also a good
shot, although he never
used his talent, as he was
too fond of animals and
never murdered anyone!
When he was quite
young, in the country, he
even tried to ride a cow,
but the cow got the better
of him. Also, when he vis-
ited Iceland, he rode a
local pony, which was so
small that my father
complained that his legs
dragged on the ground.
As to gymnastics, he
practiced exercises every
day; when we were in Spain,
the neighbors complained,
