THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, February 3, 1984 37 AINII1par, Advanced Technology for the Dairy Cow HAIFA — "Electronics," computers," "monitors," "sensors," "remote control." These are the words that Prof. Ram Sagi associates these days with the dairy. Sounds strange? Perhaps — but not for an expert who contends that the dairy is " undergoing an industrial revolution. "Our goal is to apply technology from the field of computers and electronics to agriculture," says Prof. Ram Sagi, of the Faculty of Agricultural Engineering at the Technion — Israel In- DINNER THEATRE AT HYATT REGENCY 0 DEARBORN presents JIMMY LAUNCE starring in "TRIBUTE" A Comedy by BERNARD SLADE Group Rates and Performances Available Reservations: 593-1234 Fri. & Sat 8:30 P.M. "We are very close to the day in which milking instructions will be given by a computer. The milking process, milk transport and delivery will be automated under the supervision and control of a computer. The Bi-National U.S.- Israel Fund has recently es- tablished a joint program between the Faculty of Ag- ricultural Engineering at the Technion and the Uni- versity of Illinois for the de- velopment of a corn- puterizd system of man- agement in the dairy. The research, when completed, will serve as a tool for guid- ing the development of an Israeli-made system. Prof. Sagi believes it will take a year to produce a working model, and four years to create a commercially- viable system. The large size of dairies 1,000 or more cows — has made further auto- — mation a necessity. Says Prof. Sagi, "Every mis- take, even the smallest one, can be harmful to the entire dairy. For exam- ple, when the price of food reaches 60-70 per- cent of the total expendi- ture, it is very important to give each cow the appropriate portion, in terms of quantity and composition. In dairies of this size, there is no way to fulfill such a task with- out the use of a very sophisticated corn- puterized system." "Remote sensing" is one example of the use of high technology in the dairy. It is possible by electronic means to identify each cow in the dairy and receive in- formation regarding her lo- cation, the quantity of food she ate and how much she needs to eat, the milking output, the temperature of the milk, and a sample of her physiological data and physical activities. This data makes it possible to computerize the cow's milk- ing timetable and deter- mine a proper dietary schedule. Additionally, this infor- mation enables the identifi- cation of a problem before the actual clinical signs ap- pear. Titled, "From Death to Hope: Liturgical Reflec- tions on the Holocaust," the service includes a prayer de- livered by Pope John Paul II at Auschwitz in 1979 and an invocation by German Pas- tor Martin Niemoeller, as well as other prayers, bibli- cal texts and Holocaust re- flections. Anger makes dull men witty. dairy are thus able to take preventative measures in a dangerous health situation. One component of the computerized system is the electronic "milk meter." Prof. Sagi and Eli Palo have developed an electronic milk meter at the Tzahan factory at Kibutz Ofakim. The electronic milk meter measures the quantity of milk given by a cow (using a similar principle to a gas station pump) on a continu- ous basis, as compared to the once-a-month reading as practiced today. The project is being supported by Israel's Ministry of In- dustry and Trade. Predicts Ram Sagi, "there is no doubt that the day is near in which we will be milking cows by remote control." 7-. • --5 4 1 1;nottn letiwee 27822 ORCHARD LAE.- RD.
