JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Foreign Minister Bill
Hayden of Australia urged
President Yitzhak Shamir
to impose a freeze on set-
tlement activity in the ad-
ministered territories and
suggested that Israel recog-
nize the right of Palesti-
nians to self-determination.
He said he was expressing
the unanimous view of the
Australian Cabinet that the
settlements were unjus-
tified under international
law.
Hayden, who is in
Damascus after a five-day
visit to Israel, part of a gen-
eral tour of Middle East
countries, conferred at
length with Shamir on

Mideast issues, particularly
Lebanon, Syria, and the
Iran-Iraq war.
They also discussed the
future of the 100-member
Australian contingent
with the multi-national
force in Sinai which
monitors compliance
with the terms of the 1979
peace treaty between Is-
rael and Egypt.
Before leaving Israel,
Hayden told a press confer-
ence in Jerusalem that the
Sinai multinational force
has enhanced stability in
the region. The mandate of
the Australian contingent
ends on March 31 and
Hayden stressed that its re-
newal was up to the Austra-
lian Cabinet.
He also said that his talks
with Shamir had been
productive and differences
of opinion had narrowed on
the issues of West Bank set-
tlements and self-
determination for Palesti-
nians.

NASHVILLE, Tenn.
(JTA) — A hereditary dis-
ease, multiple endocrine
neoplasia, may have con-
tributed to David's easy vic-
tory over Goliath, according
to the February issue of
GEO Magazine.
Psychiatrist Pauline
Rabin and endocrinologist
David Rabin, a Vanderbilt
University Medical Center
husband - and - wife team,
say that extensive biblical
research has led them to be-
lieve that the villainous
giant suffered from that
rare disorder, which causes
tumors to grow in the
endocrine glands.
This would account for
Goliath's incredible size,
and the fact that he was par-
tially blind.
David's stone, the Rabins
surmise, may have struck a
cyst on Goliath's forehead,
penetrating his skull and
piercing his brain.

Budapest Ghetto 39th Anniversary

NEW YORK — A
wreath-laying ceremony
was held in Budapest last
week to mark the 39th an-
niversary of the liberation
of the former Jewish ghetto
from the Nazis, the World
Jewish Congress reported.
According to Radio
Budapest, Imre Heber,
president of the Magyar Is-
raelitak Orszagos Kepvise-
lete, the Central Board of
Hungarian Jews, delivered
formal remarks. The cere-
mony was held at what is

now a school on the corner of
Wesselenyi Street and Ker-
tesz Street, the former
entrance of the ghetto.

Following Dr. Heber's
remarks, flowers of remem-
brance and a wreath were
placed at the memorial tab-
let located there. Flowers
were also laid at the memo-
rial tablet on Wesselenyi
Street in the arcades of the
Heroes' Temple, where one
of the gates of the ghetto
once stood.
