Leukemia Research at Weizmann
REHOVOT — The Weiz-
mann Institute of Science
has again been singled out
by the Chicago-based
Leukemia Research Found-
ation. Six of LRF's 16 grants
were awarded to Weizmann
scientists.
The foundation's Medical
Advisory Board has decided
to continue funding four on-
going Weizmann investiga-
tions, and to sponsor two
new ones.
The latter are a study of
DNA and RNA extracted
from leukemic cells, specifi-
cally the P53 cellular tumor
antigen, and an investiga-
tion of specific genes (on-
cogenes) which, though pre-
sent in all cells, are also in-
volved in malignancies.
The ongoing projects are
application of bone marrow
transplants in the treat-
ment of leukemia cases in
which matched donors can-
not be found; investigation
of the relationship between
RNA tumor viruses and cer-
tain genes of cellular ori-
gins; elucidation of the
mechanism by which mouse
cells modulate the growth of
normal and leukemic
hemopoietic cells and
search on the capacity of
blood system tumors.
