The Israeli film industry
has been making inroads in
recent years, producing
some of its finest films ever
and attracting worldwide
attention. Israeli film pro-
ducers and directors, who
have been trying to promote
their product in the United
States in various ways, are
now putting Israeli movies
on videocassettes. The films
are in Hebrew with English
subtitles.
"Our goal is to bring the
Israeli cinema to the living
rooms of Americans," Meir
Fenigstein, president of the
Israel Video Center, said in
a recent interview. Fenigs-
tein, who is also the, execu-
tive director of the annual
Israeli Film Festival in New
York, feels that the project
will attract American Jews

to the cultural oppor-
tunities that the Israeli
films can offer them. "It is a
whole new look at Israel and
its society to be experienced
by American Jews," he said.
Currently, Fenigstein
said, six Israeli feature
films are available on vid-
eocassettes. They are: "An
Intimate Story," a drama
about the breakdown of
marriage in a kibutz, star-
ring the famous ISraeli
singer, Chava Alberstein;
"The Troupe," a musical
comedy involving members
of an army entertainment
group following the Six-Day
War; and "Save the
Lifeguard," the comic ad-
ventures of a zany
lifeguard, starring and di-
rected by Uri Zohar, Israel's
foremost entertainers.
Also, "Hagashash," a
slapstick comedy featur-
ing,Israel's favorite com-
edy team; "King for a
Day," a comedy about a
hotel porter pretending
to be a wealthy busi-
nessman to impress his
American daughter, di-
rected by Asaf Dayan;
and "Sallah," one of the
most famous Israeli films
ever produced, starring
Chaim Topol. This latter
film, a comedy dealing
with an immigrant family
in a development town,
was nominated for an
Academy Award.
Fenigstein said that
documentary films from Is-
rael as well as "the best of-
ferings" from Israeli televi-
sion will soon be available
for distribution in the U.S.
He said that the Israeli film
industry produces about 15
new films each year. "We
will try to be selective and
bring the best dramas and
best entertainment," he
said.
