The two films are the work of Jewish craftsmen. "Reuben, Reuben" was written by veteran Julius J. Epstein who in the 1940s, with his late twin brother Philip, won an Academy Award for "Casablanca." Epstein wrote the touching screen adaptation of "Re- uben, Reuben" from the novel by Peter De Vries. While Epstein is past 70, producer Walter Shenson and director Robert Ellis Miller are middle-aged; the latter is an alumnus from the Yiddish stage in New York. On the other hand, those behind the scene of "Heart Like a Wheel" are in their thirties. Jonathan Kaplan, the Paris-born director, is the son of film composer Sol Kaplan. Also at work on the film, dealing in a novel way with automobile races, is composer Leonard Rosenthal supplying the score. "Reuben, Reuben" stars Scottish actor Tom Conti whom we had seen on the television screen in "The Wall," from the novel by John Hersey. "Heart Like a Wheel" is the real-life story of racing champion Shirley Muldowney, portrayed by look-alike Bonnie Bedelia. While the hero of "Reuben, Reuben" is a charming scoundrel who has the seed of self-destruction within him, Bedelia depicts a de- termined young woman who wrestled with the de- mands of her dreams, not success but achievement. * * * BILLY WILDER, the Academy Award-winning film director and screen writer, recently presented the American Technion Society's Albert Einstein Award to Jack Lemmon, a staunch supporter of the • state of Israel, in Los Angeles. Rabbi Krasilschikov was one of the last great tal- mudic scholars in Russia. He died in 1965. Without a Jewish library and under constant fear of discovery and reprisal, Rabbi Krasilschikov la- bored in Moscow for 20 years to produce his com- mentary to the Jerusalem Talmud. On his deathbed, he asked Rabbi Harry Bronstein of the Al Tidom Association to rescue the manuscripts. After 13 years of effort, the manuscripts were re- moved from Russia.
