The latest data is based on 1981 figures. The council made the study to help Winnipeg Jewish organizations and institutions to plan more ef- fectively to meet the Jewish community's future needs. The study found that the Jewish population was shifting from Winnipeg's north end to its south end, according to the Winnipeg Jewish Post. The study also indicated that Winnipeg's Jewish population reached its peak of 19,376 in 1961 and drop- ped to 15,355 in 1981. Win- nipeg's Jewish community continues to rank as the third largest in Canada, be- hind Toronto, which has 123,725 Jews; and Montreal, with 101,365. Vancouver's Jewish popula- tion of 12,865 in 1981 is ex- pected to top that of Win- nipeg by 1985. The number of Win- nipeg Jews 65 and older increased to 3,780 in 1981 from 2,905 ten years ear- lier, a growth rate of nearly 25 percent. In con- trast, it was reported, only about 10 percent of Canada's total popula- tion was 65 and over in 1981. Evelyn Katz, chairperson for the study, said the data indicated a "dramatic exodus" of young Jews. In 1971, the number of Win- nipeg Jews aged 15 to 24 was 3,300. Ten years later, the same generation was of child-bearing age — 25 to 34 — but its numbers had dropped about 40 percent to less than 2,000. She said a follow-up "at- titudinal survey" will help to determine why so many younger Jews are leaving Winnipeg. Katz suggested that the exodus was partly because large numbers of younger Winnipeg Jews leave for postgraduate study and do not come back. The data also shows that the exit of the younger Jews from Winnipeg can be traced as far back as the 1941 Canadian census and that the rate of loss has in- creased with each succeed- ing census.
