Circles close to Rabbi
Shach explained that his
strong words were directed
against the Chabad of today
and not against the book.
Rabbi Shach was protesting
in this way against Chabad
projects like "The Tank,"
"God's Army" and "Messiah
Now" which are being con-
ducted among Israeli
soldiers in Lebanon.

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Is-
raeli Prime Minister Yit-
zhak Shamir escaped un-
scathed from a traffic acci-
dent last week. He returned
to his normal work
schedule, including another
meeting with West German
Chancellor Helmut Kohl,
after an X-ray examination
at the Sheba Hospital at Tel
Hashomer.
The incident occurred as
Shamir was leaving Ben-
Gurion International Air-
port for Jerusalem after
welcoming President
Chaim Herzog on his return
from an official visit to
Zaire and Liberia.
A policeman was holding
back traffic entering the
freeway to allow Shamir's
car to speed through. But an
unmarked police car disre-
garded the line of waiting
cars, by-passed them on the
side of the road and entered
the freeway, crashing into
the premier's limousine.
Both cars were slightly
damaged.

.
years ago by the founder of
the Chabad Lubavitch
movement, Rabbi Shneur
Zalman ben Baruch from
Ladi, who was known as
"The old Rabbi," The
boycott order has caused a
storm among Lubavitchers.
In a strongly-worded let-
ter to the Lithuanian
yeshivot in Israel, Rabbi
Shach attacked the
Lubavitch as a "sect" (a
group which split from
Jewry). He wrote that he
had heard with anguish
that a certain sect, which
had once been accepted as
an Hasidic group with high
standing "has left the right
way and preached things
which one should not say
and hear, because they
upset our Holy Faith.
"They instigate and
teach the book 'Tanya'
with the intention to win
over people to their ideas
and system. I have heard
that some yeshiva schol-
ars are also studying
`Tanya' and that the
Chabad people succeed
in influencing naive
yeshiva scholars who are
then unable to learn and
to proceed in Bible and
religious faith because
according to the Chabad
people, Bible studying is
not the main element.
"According to my idea,
this is a foreign plant in the
yeshiva, which undermines
studying the Bible and
keeping up the religious
faith. In studying the Bible,
one learns what is allowed
and what is forbidden. One
should not take into account
the opinions of the Chabad
