Packaging Tests to Save Shippers HAIFA — An improved method of plastic foam pac- kaging recently developed at Technion-Israel Institute of Technology will elimi- nate millions of dollars of damage to exported prod- ucts. Prof. Joseph Miltz of the Food Engineering and Biotechnology Department and head of the Packaging Laboratory, has determined how to improve the packag- ing of a wide variety of products, using the minimal amount of plastic foam while ensuring the maximum protection. According to Prof. Miltz, "Our research will enable manufacturers to evaluate the cushioning properties of plastic foam on a scientific and engineering basis. Pac- kaging designers will be able to carry out a simple compression test on the de- sired cushioning materials_ "The test results are then applied to a math- ematical model which evaluates the energy ab- sorbing capability of the foam and the force it transfers to the packaged product. This informa- tion is what ensures a good packaging design," states Miltz. Israeli industry currently uses up to 300 percent extra foam in packaging. "Man- ufacturers tend to overcom- pensate with too much cush- ioning because of a lack of precise knowledge," notes Miltz. The new method de- signed by Prof. Miltz re- quires only 30-50 percent excess foam packaging to be used, and this is expected to drop to 10 percent.
