THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Argentina Orders Protection for Jewish Institutions There BUENOS AIRES (JTA) — Interior Minister An- tonio Troccoli has ordered the police to guard Jewish schools and synagogues in the country, following at- tacks against synagogues in two cities this month. According to the World Jewish Congress - Latin American branch, uniden- tified persons attacked the Sephardic Synagogue in Rosario on New Year's Day and the Templo Libertad in Buenos Aires on Jan. 12. In reaction to these events, Troccoli ordered the police to guard synagogues and Jewish schools and is- sued a statement declaring that the Minister of the Interior considered it his duty to renew the deep pluralistic commitment of the government and its spe- cial respect for all religious parties . ." He added: "Episodes such as those which have recently occurred, fortu- nately sporadic, only re- veal the existence of some extemist left-overs which will be fought with all the weapons that democracy can put at the service of freedom and in the de- fense of its institutions." Troccoli received a dele- gation of DAIA, the central representative body of Argentine Jewry and the WJC affiliate here, headed by acting president Luis Comisarenco and secretary general Hilel Rubinson. He assured them that a thorough investigation would be undertaken to un- cover the perpetrators of the attacks with the aim of "applying exemplary punishment." The prestigious news- paper Clarin referred in an editorial last week to the re- cent events, viewing them in the larger context of mili- tary politics in the after- math of President Alfon- sin's election. Clarin stated: "The military are in no condition to change things nor to exert any pressure, but trustwor- thy sources believe that certain sectors might look for extremist outlets to make their views Soviets Prodded on Wallenberg NEW YORK — Jeane Kirkpatrick, American Ambassador to the United Nations, last week called on the Soviet Union to provide information on the fate of Raoul Wallenberg, the Swedish diplomat who saved the lives of nearly 100,000 Hungarian Jews from Nazi death camps in World War II. Mrs. Kirkpatrick made the appeal at a ceremony in New York marking the 39th anniversary of Wallen- berg's arrest by Soviet forces in Budapest. The event was sponsored by the Raoul Wallenberg Commit- tee of the United States in affiliation with the Anti- Defamation League of Bnai Brith. The committee be- lieves that Wallenberg, now 71, is alive in a Soviet prison despite statements by the Soviet Union that he died in 1947. NY Singles NEW YORK (JTA) — A Riverdale Orthodox rabbi opened a conference here on serving Jewish singles with an estimate that of the 1.7 million Jews in the New York area, some 400,000 are single. known. This is why the attacks against Jewish temples and certain tele- phone threats to legis- lators are being closely watched .. . "Synagogues have always been the first aim of right- wing terrorism. Up to now the attacks have had mini- mal impact .. . "The government reacted with the energy demanded by the aggression against a large national community. Not only did it clearly re- pudiate the attacks; -but it also ordered the immediate guarding of the temples and Jewish schools." Friday, January 21, 1984 45 SOMETHING TO SMILE ABOUT ALVIN V.
