biography, In the Mouth of
the Wolf' (Jewish Publica-
tion Society).
Forced to move time after
time to escape suspecting
Nazi soldiers, Rose, then in
her late teens, would knock
on strangers' doors to ask
for a night's lodging for her
and her little brother. Often
when there was no haven,
the pair spent the night
outdoors in inclement
weather.
She held numerous jobs
for short periods of time and
would often find herself
forced to quit in lieu of being
captured by the Nazis.

grated to the United States
with her husband and more
than 100 Jewish orphans
(whom she smuggled out)

UNESCO' Move
UNITED NATIONS —
The secretary general of
UNESCO (United Nations
Educational, Scientific and
Cultural Organization) has
urged the Reagan Adminis-
tration to reconsider its de-
cision to leave the organiza-
tion next year.
Amadou-Mahtar M'Bow,
in a letter to U.S. Secretary
of State George P. Shultz
last week, emphasized the
"need to maintain the uni-
versality" of the UN body
and expressed the hope that
the U.S. would decide to re-
main in UNESCO while
giving it "full and
wholehearted cooperation."
The Reagan Administra-
tion had announced its in-
tentions to pull out of UN-
ESCO in a Dec. 29 state-
ment which chided the
organization for its constant
budgetary problems and an
anti-American posture, in-
cluding condemnations of
Israel. The U.S. contributes
some 25 percent of the funds
required to run UNESCO.

a girl of 12, who was born
without stirrups in either
ear, to several patients over
age 60.
Dr. Sadeh stresses that
the new device is for per-
sons with damaged or de-
stroyed stirrups and not
for deaf persons whose
hearing loss is caused by
other problems.
His invention consists of
producing a stirrup which
the body does not reject.
"Other artificial stapes
(the medical name for the
bone) have generally been
made of plastic, but after
some time the body rejected
them," he said.
His prosthesis has two
parts: the one touching the
ear-drum is made from an-
other of the tiny bones in the
inner ear, the hammer.
Part of the hammer is
snipped away, and this
piece serves as the base
for the second part,
which at first was made
of teflon and now of
ceramic.
A tiny hole is bored in the
hammer and the ceramic is
fitted in. The device is only
five millimeters long and
one millimeter wide.
