Emphasis on Torah, con-
cern with scientific studies
and the legitimacy of such
studies have attained
recognition as a result of the
activities of the Association
of Orthodox Jewish Scien-
tists.
For a number of years the
proceedings of this organi-
zation have been published,
thus lending additional
legitimacy to the move-
ment.
"Behavioral Sciences and
Mental Health" is the
seventh volume in a series
containing the proceedings
of the association held re-
cently. This Sepher-
Hermon Press volume con-
tains the texts of a number
of the reported lectures as
well as a statement defining
the purpose of the move-
ment, which states:
"Founded in 1948, the
general aims of the associa-
tion are to present a forum
for the intellectual apprai-
sal of problems confronting
the Orthodox Jew living in a
scientifically attuned
society; to provide a meet-
ing ground for constructive
incorporation of scientific
knowledge and thinking
into a Torah way of life; and
to serve the Jewish commu-
nity, especially in the areas
of expertise of the Orthodox
scientist."
The lectures in the cur-
rent volume discuss such
topics as "The Role of Val-
ues in Psychotherapy,"
"Torah-based Family
Therapy," "Self-Awareness
and Self-Analysis" and
"The Russians: A New
Jewish Community in Otir
Midst."
Contributors to this, the
seventh volume from the
association include Dr.
Leon Hankoff, Dr. Paul
Kahn, Prof. Sam Nadler,
Prof. Moshe Halevi Spero,
Prof. Hayim Granot and Dr.
Rueven P. Bulka.
N.J. OKs Autopsy Bill
NEW YORK (JTA) —
The two houses of the New
Jersey Legislature have
each given unanimous ap-
proval to a new measure
which would bar medical
examiners from performing
autopsies over protests of
observant Jewish families.
Gov . Thomas Kean is ex-
pected to sign the bill
shortly, an official of the
New Jersey chapter of
Agudath Israel said.
Rabbi Yakov Dombroff
said the bill is basically
similar to the law in the
New York State, which was
drafted by the National
Jewish Commission on Law
and Public Affairs.
Under terms of the
measure approved by the
New Jersey Legislature
on Jan. 9, a medical
examiner must notify the
family of plans for an
autopsy and if the family
objects on religious
grounds, the examiner
cannot perform the au-
topsy and must return
the body to the family.
The medical examiner
can perform an autopsy, de-
spite such family objections,
if the death involves a mat-
ter "of interest to the state,"
which refers to the possibil-
ity of homicide or a threat to
the public health.
To get a name can happen
but to few: it is one of the few
things that cannot be
bought. It is the free gift of
mankind, which must be
deserved before it will be
granted, and is at last un-
willingly bestowed.
