The Best of Everything

CAUTION . . .°A mighty
important word in show
business . . . when doing a
memory . . . Especially one
so sacred as Damon Ru-
nyon's "Guys & Dolls" .. .
For certain no retooling .. .
and Heaven forbid . . . any
on-stage ad libbing with
this classic.
Back in 1952, "Guys &
Dolls" opened on Broadway
with Robert Alda as Sky
Masterson, Sam Levine as
Nathan Detroit and Vivian
Blaine as Adelaide.
Then came the movie
with Marlon Brando as Sky
Masterson, Frank Sinatra
as Nathan Detroit, the same
Vivian Blaine as Adelaide
and Jean Simmons as Sarah
Brown.
Both musical versions
were award winners . . . and
are still acclaimed today.
It would be proper to

say that the memory of
Damon Runyon is
blessed because of
people like Nancy Gur-
win ... She and her
production company
have been doing "Guys &
Dolls" for years, al-
though not the same cast
... and it gets better each
time.
Nancy, queen of local
musical comedy, does the
role of Adelaide to perfec-
tion . . . giving that nasal
twang, New Yorkish accent,.
appropriate sneezes and
naiveness their very just
due . . plus singing, danc-
ing and acting with vivaci-
ous charisma.
Since opening at the
Botsford Inn, Grand River
and Eight Mile, Nov. 13 for
the press . . . and officially
on Nov. 17 . . . "Guys &
Dolls" by Nancy Gurwin
Productions has played to
near and capacity crowds.
This was a Thursday
night when I recently
attended . . . and the
weather outside was below
zero . . . It's got to tell you
something that the place
was packed . . . not a seat to
be had for whomever would
dare straggle in . . . espe-
cially during this weather.
"Guys & Dolls" has
been told about many,
many times . . . Its story is
warm, humorous and
entertaining . . . The
music and lyrics by
Frank Loesser are su-
perb.
The show opens at a
newspaper stand on Broad-
way . . . Damon Runyon's
Broadway . . . and continues
on in a fast-paced, well
coordinated series of
laugh-getters and song styl-
ings, mildly interspersed
with touches of seriousness.
The directing by Nancy
Brassert, choreography by
Deborah DeCeco and musi-
cal direction by Barbara
Anne Gowans are outstand-
ing.
Casting for "Guys &
Dolls" isn't the easiest thing
to do . . . but here Nancy
Gurwin Productions shines
. . . Each person plays his or
her part with feeling . . . and
if you haven't got that with
Damon Runyon, you just
don't belong . . . that's all
there is to it.
Who would have
thought a Lutheran
minister could play the
part of Benny South-
street?. ... That's what
happens at Botsford
Dinner Theater . . . as
Mike Rothaar goes out of
everyday character to
imbibe in the armoa of
onstage perfumery.
"Guys & Dolls" at
Botsford Inn by Nancy
Gurwin Productions is in
two acts . . . and bundled to-
gether with cohesive
enjoyment . . . The stage at
historic Botsford Inn for this
show is structured in a
strategic place . . . on a side
wall that enables everyone
in the 140 seating capacity
room with tables . . . to see
and hear.

Edgar A. Guest III as
Nathan Detroit, Adelaide's
floating crap-game
sweetheart of 14 years (her
mother thinks they're mar-
ried, have six children and
he is an assistant manager
at A&P), is very good as
usual . . . Like Nancy, Ed's
facial expressions and quick
lines are extreme assets .. .
Joe Lannen plays a good
Sky Masterson and Leah
Myers as Sarah Brown of
the Salvation Army Save A
Soul Mission, is a pretty
young lady.
Frank Loesser's music in
"Guys & Dolls" has been
talked about almost as
much as Damon Runyon's
characters . . . put together
into one package by Abe
Burrows and Joe Swerling.
Nancy Gurwin is sim-
ply splendid as Miss
Adelaide ... star of the
Hot Box Cafe . . . singing
and dancing as the queen
of local musical comedy
is capable of in her
highly-regarded 'degree
of entertainment merit.
First act has songs like "A
Bushel And A Peck,"
"Adelaide's Lament," "Guys
& Dolls," "I've Never Been
In Love Before," "If I Were A
Bell," "My Time of Day,"
etc. among 12 . . . Second act
includes "Take Back Your
Mink," "More I Cannot
Wish You," "Luck Be A
Lady," "Sue Me," "Sit
Down, You're Rockin' The
Boat," etc. among eight.
These are outstanding
numbers by Loesser.
"Guys & Dolls" by Nancy
Gurwin Productions at
Botsford Inn is Thursdays,
Saturdays and Sundays .. .
Coming in April is Nancy in
"I- Do! I Do!" . . . She has the
prestigious distinction of
having previously produced
and starred in this as De-
troit's longest running
dinner-theater show.
Even if you've seen "Guys
& Dolls" before, you must
see it again by Nancy Gur-
win Productions at Botsford
Inn . . . for the very simple
reason that she and her cast
play it as it should be .. .
they don't fool around with
a legend . . . It's a very good
evening out . . . and well
worth the $18.50 dinner and
show price.
Nancy, Ed, Joe, Leah
and troupe bring back
memories . . . pleasurably.

HERE'S A DIFFER-
ENT kind of Greek-
American restaurant . . .
Rodos . . . next to Restau-
rant Duglass in Farrell's
Shopping Plaza, Southfield
and 12 1/2 Mile . . . which
opened just last week .. .
Locale was former Maria
Eng (also Highway Ribbery,
PX Bar-B-Q, Bloom's Cater-
ing and banquet area of
Mama Zelda's).
It has a corned beef on rye
. . . and things no other res-
taurant has . . . like rice
pudding which isn't the or-
dinary . . . called Rice Pud-
ding Souffle . . . excellent
. . . with apricots . . . made
