Learning Disabled Children Aided by NY Federation By BEN GALLOB (Copyright 1984, JTA, Inc.) Hundreds of children with learning disabilities in New York Jewish families are being helped by agen- cies of the New York Feder- ation of Jewish Philan- thropies. A federation spokesper- son said that the key is recognition that the prob- lem exists, and that once this happens, various feder- ation agencies provide diagnosis, evaluation and treatment. Such programs include individual tutoring when requried, vocational training, and psychotherapy to help the children develop self- confidence and social skills. Symptoms include mirror-writing, dyslexia (reading and language dis- abilities), discalcula (simi- lar problems with num- bers), hyperactivity, and problems of coordination and balance, perception, reasoning and memory. Even gifted children can have these problems, ex- perts said. Nathan Solomon, a psychologist for the Jewish Board of Family and Children's Services (JBFCS) asserted that "parents should suspect a learning disability if their child has chronic learning problems which do not see consistent with the child's intelligence." The Learning Disabilities Center at Manhattan's Beth Israel Medical Center makes use of the center's departments of psychiatry and rehabilitation medicine. Neuromuscular tests are given to youngsters, in addition to the psychiatric and dis- abilities evaluations. Chil- dren are sent to occupa- tional therapists, speech therapists or family therapists. Some are sent for private treatment. Other federation medical centers with such programs are Mount Sinai in Manhat- tan, Montefiore in the Bronx, and Maimonides in Brooklyn, which has special outpatient services for such children.
