THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS,
Settlement Centennials Marked
By ISRAEL I. BICK
President, Israel
Stamp Collectors Society
Israel has issued a set of
commemorative stamps
marking the centennial of
Nes Ziyyona settlement on
Israel's coastal plane. The
community now has 14,000
residents and is known for
its production of honey and
citrus, as well as light in-
dustry.
Yesud Ha-Maala is also
honored in this set. It bor-
ders the Huleh swamps, one
of the wildest areas of Pales-
tine a century ago. In 1883,
a group of Polish Zionists
made their way to this land
and settled in what they
named "Yesud Hama'ala"
(The Beginning of the As-
cent) based on Ezra 7:9: "For
upon the first day of the first
month began he to go up
from Babylon."
In the 1950s, drainage of
the Huleh swamps greatly
improved the area and
today 550 people cultivate
the approximately 2,000
acres of land.

Another new issue, the
IS 15 stamp, depicts a
symbolical allegory to
Afula, an urban center in
the Jezreel Valley. This
development has an in-
teresting history dating
back to the beginning of
the century. Yet, it was
only after 1954 that this
community began a rapid
and successful develop-
ment.
Today the town has over
20,000 inhabitants earning
their livelihood by working
on farms, factories and in
offices. The District Hospi-
tal has over 400 beds.

Archeological finds in the
area brought forth pottery
typical of the year 4000
BCE-. Other digs brought
evidence of the Bronze Age
and traces of a Crusader
castle.
