In conjunction with this first exhibit, the Holocaust Memorial Center has scheduled three pertinent films written, produced and directed in Germany. "Jacob the Liar" probes the occupants of a Jewish ghetto who are desperately in need of a ray of hope dur- ing World War II. "Our Time in the Garden" is the true story of a young Jewish woman growing up in Be- rlin at the time of Hitler's rise to power. The opening was attended by Israel's Ambas- sador to West Germany, Itzchak Ben-Ari, and the Bonn Minister of Youth and Family, Heiner Geissler. The exchange is impor- tant to both countries. It is subsidized largely by the West German federal gov- ernment and the federal states and is the largest program of its kind for Germany, except for youth exchange with France. For Israel, the program is by far the most extensive. There was a sharp decline in 1982 because of the Lebanon war and the anti- Israel attitudes it engendered in Germany. There was, however, a slight upturn last year. But official sources say there is an increasing tendency among West Germany youth groups to choose ex- changes with Arab coun- tries rather than with Is- rael. All colors agree in the dark. erated. The exhibit will run March 4-28 at the main Jewish Community Center. Volunteers in all capacities are needed. For informa- tion, call the HMC, 661- 1000, ext. 201. 559-5908 297 58 Southfield Rd.
