THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 42 Friday, 'January 20, 1984 Don Cook's De Gaulle Biography Intermingles Arrogance and Skills Charles De Gaulle wrote his name indelibly in 20th Century world history. He was the master in France after the last world war and he triggered an activity that made his leadership of a government in exile among the leading factors in the battles against Hitlerism. He antagonized, yet domi- nated. His arrogance and skills are impressively depicted in a magnificent biography, "Charles De Gaulle" by Don Cook (Putnam). Cook has much to say about the critical attitudes toward De Gaulle by his al- lies in the war against Nazism. Cook resorts to one interesting quotation from Charles De Gaulle about "ally/ adversary" Churchill: "A great man? Why, he's selfish, he's arrogant, he thinks he is the center of the universe . . . he . . . yes, he's JERUSALEM (ZINS) — The Jewish population of Guatemala has been var- iously estimated at some- where between 1,300 and 2,000. It is probably closer to the lower estimate. The first Jews of recent history arrived from Ger- many after 1880. They were followed in the 1920s by Sephardic Jews of Mid- Eastern origin and in the pre-World War II era by a wave of Ashkenazi Jews from Europe. Three congregations thus came into being. re es a.saw as an • • • ✓ COUPON a° 6113 DARLIN' LILLY'S 1 1 29200 ORCHARD LAKE BETWEEN 12 & 13 MILE RDS. 851.4577 ANY TWO VEAL DIMES 94.95 I NEW ZEALAND LOBSTER TAIL DINNER FOR TWO $19.951, I I I PRIME RIB OF BEEF AU DS FOR TWO $16.95 Both dinners include: Choice of soup du jour or salad, baked potato, rice pilaf or fettucini tres and basket of homemade bread. De Gaulle in power and in decline is efficiently por- trayed by Cook, who has covered the political and military scene in Europe since World War II. His biography of De Gaulle is the story of the era of Nazi terrorism and the Western European manipulations as well as machinations. Mendes- France joined De Gaulle in London after his escape and was an oppo- nent of De Gaulle when he attained power in his native land at the end of the war. Of major interest in the Cook biography is De Gaul- le's antagonism to Israel after the 1967 Six-Day War. There was an exchange of correspondence with David Ben-Gurion, and here, too, there was the arrogance of the French leader. This chapter in French-Israel re- lations requires additional comment which will be made in a subsequent re- view-addendum of the not- able Cook biography. —P.S.
