Orthodox Fight
Over Dayanim
JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The National Religious
Party and the Aguda Israel
are at loggerheads over the
composition of the commit-
tee which appoints dayanim
— religious court judges.
The committee reserves two
seats for Knesset members
and Aguda Israel demands
that one of them be filled by
its MK, Menahem Porush.
The NRP is opposed on
grounds that the Aguda
tends to support the ap-
pointment of dayanim from
non-Zionist yeshivas who
have never done military
service. Yehuda Ben-Meir,
chairman of the NRP's
Knesset faction, raised that
point in a private conversa-
tion with Premier Yitzhak
Shamir.
