The Pierce Street Gallery in Birmingham will open a month-long exhibition to- morrow of 35 prints from the 16,000 photographs taken by Dr. Roman Vis- hniac of Eastern European Jewry before the Holocaust. Dr. Vishniac was a speaker at the Jewish Community Center's Book Fair in November. Of the 16,000 photographs he took between 1936 and 1939, only 2,000 negatives sur- vived World War II. His photographs, now published in book form, include pictures of Jewish life in the villages and cities, at homes, in synagogues and heders. Now 87, Dr. Vishniac con- tinues to lecture widely on Eastern European Jewry and the Holocaust. The ex- hibition of his prints will be at the gallery, 217 Pierce, through Feb. 18. Gallery hours are 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Wednesday through Satur- day. The Greek and Arab sci- ences were first intro- duced to Europe by Jewish scholars from Spain. Wallenberg AZA won the AZA basket- ball tournament, while Benny AZA won AZA bowl- Fires Hit Forests JERUSALEM (JTA) — Nearly 15,000 dunams (3,800 acres) of forests were destroyed by 662 fires in 1983, according to the Jewish National Fund. The biggest blazes were on the slopes of the Carmel range near Haifa. There is an admis- sion charge. The AZA Basketball League will begin noon Jan. 29 at Oakland Community College, Orchard Ridge campus. Applications for the league have been mailed to all nationally - registered members of Michigan Region AZA. Additional applications may be obtained from chap- ter presidents. Chapter registration must be turned in by Monday, but supplementary registration for the league will be ac- cepted through Feb. 6. A meeting for team coaches and captains will be held on Jan. 23 at 5:30 p.m. at the BBYO office. Each participating chap- ter must have a represen- tative at that meeting. Coordinator of the AZA Basketball League is Neal Zipser of Benny AZA. The mid-year evaluation meeting for all BBG chapter presidents will take place at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Dubin Meeting Room at the Bnai Brith Building. The next BBYO adviser group meeting will take place 10 a.m. Jan. 22 at the BBYO office. The meeting will include a regional con- vention evaluation as well as a continuation of the chapter problem-solving clinic.
