NEW YORK — All
Americans, among them
American Jews, must
surely rejoice over the fre-
eing of Lt. Robert Goodman
from Syrian captivity. And
all of us share in apprecia-
tion of the bold, catalytic
role that the Rev. Jesse
Jackson and other religious
leaders played in helping
bring about that happy re-
sult.
But that appreciation is
accompanied by some seri-
ous misgivings. Among
them are the following:
First, Rev. Jackson trans-
formed this humanitarian
action into a geo-political

Apart from Assad's mas-
sacres of some 20,000 people
in Hama, last week a 25-
year-old Jewish woman and
her two young children
were butchered in Aleppo,
presumably by Assad's
"special service" Gestapo
types. Assad's massacres in
Lebanon are known to the
world. It will-take far more
than this one gesture, good
in itself, to persuade serious
people that Hafez Assad is a
man of peace.

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Defense Minister Moshe
Arens has confirmed that
Israeli security authorities
have re-arrested 16 former
detainees of the Ansar camp
in south Lebanon who had
been released in the pris-
oner exchange with the
Palestine Liberation
Organization last month.
He said all were suspected
of terrorist acts against Is-
raeli forces in Lebanon
since they were freed.
Twelve of the prisoners
were released after interro-
gation. Three are still being
questioned and one confes-
sed to wounding an Israeli
soldier in an attack in south
Lebanon recently.
Arens spoke in the Knes-
set in reply to a question by
Communist MK Toufik
Toubi who said he had been
informed that 160 former
Ansar detainees have been
re-arrested.

Jews Seeking
to End German
Draft Waiver

BONN (JTA) — West
Germany's Jewish commu-
nity is seeking an end to the
long-standing arrangement
by which Jewish youths of
military age are exempt
from the draft. The ar-
rangement is a tacit under-
standing derived from
Germany's past rather than
a legal waiver.
This argument has been
questioned in recent years
because not all Jews who
reach the age of 18 are from
families who suffered under
the Nazi regime. The
Jewish communal leaders
have emphasized re-
peatedly that the commu-
nity cannot indefinitely
enjoy full rights under
German law without con-
tributing to the country's
defense. This is particularly
important they say because
the Bundeswehr is facing a
manpower shortage.

America to enter into a
"strategic relationship with
the 110 million people of the
Middle East." The implica-
tion was that Rev. Jackson
regarded the "strategic al-
liance" between America
and Israel as flawed, and
that America must court in-
stead the Arab nations, rad-
ical moderate, et al.
Second, Rev. Jackson
repeatedly criticized re-
sort to "justice" and "an
eye for an eye" rather
than "mercy." That
smacked of the old and
repudiated Christian
polemic of the Christian
God of mercy being
superior and supersed-
ing the alleged Jewish
God of cold justice and
vengeance.
And finally, Rev. Jackson
seemed intent on portray-
ing President Hafez Assad
of Syria as a born-again
humanitarian. That rhetor-
ical cosmetic will deceive no
