Israel Disassociates Self
From Irish Hardliners Visit
LONDON (JTA) — The
Israeli government disasso-
ciated itself from a visit to
Israel by hardline Protes-
tant leaders from Northern
Ireland.
A statement by the Israel
Embassy said that the visit,
by five members of the Rev.
Ian Paisley's Democratic
Unionist Party, including
two Members of Parlia-
ment, was "completely pri-
vate" and that none of the
meetings they held in Israel
were sanctioned or ap-

proved by the Israeli gov-
ernment.
The statement was made
following claims in Belfast
that the delegation had had
"every cooperation" from
the Israeli government.
The Democratic
Unionist Party said the
delegation paid a six-day
visit during which it met
members of the Israeli
government and opposi-
tion and visited the West
Bank. They also toured
the Lebanese border and
spoke to manufacturers
of frontier security
equipment which they
thought might be suitable
for preventing terrorists
from infiltrating across
the Irish border.
The Israel Embassy here,
which also represents Is-
raeli interests in the Irish
Republic, is embarrassed by
the visit for political as well
as security reasons. It said
that Israel discusses secu-
rity matters only with gov-
ernments and not with pri-
vate interests from foreign
countries.
Unofficially, the embassy
also is worried that too close
an association between Is-
rael and Northern Ireland
Protestants could provoke
the IRA terrorists into ac-
tions against Israeli prop-
erty or personnel.
The Northern Irish group
visited Israel at the invita-
tion of Labor MK Michael
Bar Zohar.

Von Braun U. linked to Neo-Nazis
(Continued from Page 1)
Investigation of GAN-
PAC showed that it was
actually a group dedi-
cated to whitewashing
the crimes of the Nazi era,
according to the Wie-
senthal Center. Its recent
newsletters labelled the
television films
"Holocaust," "Winds of
War" and "Blood and
Dishonor" as anti-
German hate films and
called the Holocaust "an
exaggeration."
Additional documents ob-
tained by the Wiesenthal
Center show that three
major German-American
cultural groups — the
Steuben Society, the
Catholic Society of America
and the German-American
National Congress — pur-
ported to have backed the
proposed Von Braun Uni-
versity — were never asked
for any support from GAN-
PAC nor did they ever sup-
port such an undertaking.
Last month, Mayor Davis
told the Huntsville Times,
which had assigned its own
investigative reporter to
check out the proposed uni-
versity venture, that the
stated plans "might
endanger the sound per-
sonal relationship and
mutual trust that have per-
sisted here among native
citizens, German-
Americans and residents
from many other cultures
for more than 30 years."
Despite mounting local
opposition, there is no indi-
cation at this point that
GANPAC is scrapping its
plan. Hans Schmidt, head of
GANPAC and secretary-
treasurer of the Wernher
Von Braun University
Foundation, claimed last
month in an interview with
the Huntsville Times that
the ideology promoted by
his organization "is tradi-
tional . . . somewhat right of
center . . . the same kind of
thinking the forefathers of
America had.

Concern for Syrian Jews
Following Aleppo Murders
MONTREAL (JTA) —
The Canadian Jewish Con-
gress (CJC) sent a cable to
President Hafez Assad of
Syria this week urging him
"immediately to take all the
necessary steps to protect
the Syrian Jewish commu-
nity" in the wake of the Dec.
28 murder in Aleppo of a
Jewish mother and her two
children.
The slaying and mutila-
tion of Mrs. Lillian Adabi, a
pregnant mother, and her
six year-old son and 3 1/2
year-old daughter has
shocked Jews and others the
world over and prompted
demands that the Syrian
authorities bring the killer
to justice. Copies of the CJC
cable to Assad were sent to
Prime Minister Pierre El-
liott Trudeau and Foreign
Minister Allen McEachen.
The cable also called on
Syria, as a signatory to the
Universal Declaration of
Human Rights, to allow Sy-
rian Jews who wish to emi-
grate to leave the country.
Meanwhile, two
American Jewish organ-
izations also called on the
Syrian government to in-
vestigate and to bring to
justice those guilty of the
murder.
The Anti-Defamation
League of Bnai Brith said
that to do otherwise "would
be to leave lingering doubts
about the Syrian govern-
ment's ability to protect the
country's 4,500 Jews." The
Simon Wiesenthal Center
at Yeshiva University of
Los Angeles, in a statement
issued last week, expressed
shock and outrage over the
murders.
Ambassador
Rafik
Joujati of Syria assured offi-
cials of the Wiesenthal Cen-
whether he believed that six
million Jews died in the
Holocaust, Schmidt replied:
No, a flat no."
