NEW YORK (JTA) —
Rabbi Arthur Schneier,
president of the World
Jewish Congress - Ameri-
can Section, was received in
a private audience by Pope
John Paul II in the Vatican
late last month. Schneier,
who is the rabbi of the Park
East Synagogue in Manhat-
tan, returned last week
from a visit to Europe and
Israel.
While Schneier declined
to comment on the nature of
his conversation with the
Pope, Vatican sources in
announcing the meeting
said that the Jewish leader,
like the Pontiff, "took a
strong interest in interna-
tional affairs and human
rights."

ROME — An article by
Rabbi Marc H. Tanenbaum
of the American Jewish
Committee is featured as
the lead essay in "The
Jubilee Year and the Bible,"
a recently published sup-
plement to "L'Osservatore
Romano," the official news-
paper of the Vatican.
Rabbi Tanenbaum's es-
say, "The Holy Year and its
Origins in the Jewish
Jubilee Year," was origi-
nally published by the Vati-
can in 1975 and was trans-
lated into French, German,
Spanish, Italian and Por-
tuguese. The Italian version
of the essay appears in the
Vatican newspaper sup-
plement.

It dealt mainly with com-
plaints by West Bank Arabs
that little or no action was
taken when they were vic-
tims of violence or harass-
ment by Jewish extremists.
Karp's report found that
inadequate investigation by
the police in the territories
was due to a shortage of
manpower, lack of coordina-
tion between the various se-
curity agencies and little
cooperation from the Jewish
settlers.
