Patinkin Role in 'Yen -H.'
Led to Jewish Awakening

DICK HARRIS. CADILLAC, INC.

cordially invites you to come in and meet

NEW YORK — He has
played three Jewish char-
acters in three major films
since 1980, but it was
Mandy Patinkin's most re-
cent role, as Avigdor in
Barbra Streisand's "Yentl,"
which sent him searching
for his roots.
In the film, Avigdor must
recite a long piece from the
Talmud. Although he was
familiar with the ritual,
Patinkin traveled to
Jerusalem where he spent
several weeks studying the
Talmud and attending lec-
tures at yeshiva.
The experience awak-
ened many thoughts and
feelings that had been
sleeping in me for some
time," the actor said.
Patinkin began his Hol-
lywood career following
a successful stint on the
Broadway stage capped
by a Tony award-

winning performance as
Che Guevara in "Evita."
His first movie role was in
the film "Ragtime,"
where he played Tateh, a
photographer. In
"Daniel," Patinkin por-
trayed political activist
Paul Isaacson.
The actor enjoyed his
work with Barbra Streisand
in "Yentl" and even found
that he was able to help be-
hind the scenes.
