Religious

Jews Score Higla.
in Advanced Placement High

11 ■ 111111

NEW YORK — Religious
Jewish students who took
Advanced Placement exams
last spring, scored consider-
ably higher than their peers
across the nation, according
to results issues by the Col-
lege Board.
The exams, administered
by the Advanced Placement
Program of the College
Board, are taken nation-
wide by outstanding high
school students who seek
college credit when they
enter colleges and univer-
sities.
As the holiday of Shavuot
conflicted with exam dates,
the Yeshiva High School
Principals' Council, affil-
iated with the Board of
Jewish Education of
Greater New York (BJE),
requested the College Board
arrange special administra-
tion dates for observant
Jewish students.
The exams were taken
separately by the two
groups, allowing for

comparisons to be made
between the 300 students
and the national norm.
Eighty percent of the
religious students who
took the exams are from
the Greater New York
area.
A grade of 5 is the highest
score on the AP exams,
while a grade of 3 must be
reached in order to receive
college credits for the sub-
ject. The percentage of
Jewish students nationwide
who scored a grade of 3 or
higher, is as follows: In
chemistry, 70 percent, com-
pared to 67 percent for
others; in Math AB, 84 per-
cent, as opposed to 69 per-
cent; and in Math BC, 93
percent, compared to 73
percent for others.
In mean grades, the high-
est scores issued for Jewish
students were evident in
Math BC: an average grade
of 4.13, compared to the na-
tional average of 3.33 for
others.

Anti-Sharon Plot

JERUSALEM (ZINS) —
Former Israeli Defense
Minister Ariel Sharon
claimed in a recent Israel
Radio interview that former
Deputy Premier Simha
Ehrlich met several times
with U.S. Ambassador
Samuel Lewis in an effort to
have Sharon ousted.
Ehrlich is now dead and
the U.S. Embassy would not
comment.

Shamir Speech Stresses Aliya

32980 Industrial Rd.
Livonia, Mich.

NEW YORK — In his
first public appearance in
the United States as the
leader of Israel, Prime
Minister Yitzhak Shamir
told 1.400 people at a New
York synagogue that "our
first goal is to bring the
Jewish people back to the
land of Israel."
Speaking. at Cong.
Kehilath Jeshurun in Man-
hattan, the prime minister
stressed the historic and
religious connection be-
tween the people of Israel
and the land of Israel, the
only place, he said, in which
Jews could live full and
complete lives as Jews.
"Our second goal is to
save the Jewish people,"
Shamir continued, adding
the only way to prevent
Jews from assimilating into
Diaspora societies was by
persuading them to emi-
grate to Israel.
The prime minister told
his audience that "Israel
belongs to the entire
Jewish people," and he
suggested that Jews with
a deep belief in religious
pluralism could make
their case stronger by
settling in Israel and add-
ing to their numbers
there.
Shamir's speech — his
only public appearance dur-
ing his visit to the United
States — was sponsored by
