The two-volume work — a curriculum guide and an anthology for students — published by the ADL, ,was prepared under the auspices of the New Jersey Depart- ment of Education in coop- eration with ADL. It evolved from a pilot pro- gram initiated by ADL six years ago in the Vineland and Teaneck, N.J., high schools. Designed to sensitize stu- dents to the evils and conse- quences of bigotry, the vol- umes, already in use in New Jersey high schools, are being made available to educational institutions throughout the country. The curriculum guide is an 184-page paperback which provides teachers with a comprehensive set of study plans and teach- ing activities for ap- proaching the Holocaust and genocide, either as separate courses or inte- grated into other courses of study, an annotated bibliography and sources of audiovisual instructional aids. Its companion volume, a 217-page paperback and an- thology, consists of selec- tions of relevant fictional, non-fictional and poetic works and illustrations on the Holocaust from diverse sources, including Nobel Prize winners, survivors and their Nazi persecutors. The volumes are avail- able by calling the ADL De- troit office, 962-9686. Testifying before the judiciary committee of the state's House and Senate, Marc Stern, assistant direc- tor of AJCongress' Commis- sion on Law and Social Ac- tion, said that while his organization is sympathetic to the problem of "agunot" — women who cannot re- marry because they have not received a Jewish di- vorce — it believes the legis- lation under consideration violates the constitutional requirement of separation of church and state. Stern said his organiza- tion views the "agunot" issue not as a civil matter but as an internal problem of the Jewish religion. He offered assistance to Con- necticut legislators in devis- ing statues legalizing pre- nuptial agreements that would contain provisions designed to minimize "get" problems without violating constitutional principles.
