Out-of-towners seem to know more about it than local folk . . . and the region is where so many go when reaching here. This is Mexicotown . . . a block on Vernor where about 10 south-of-the- border restaurants are con- gregated . . . Within them is one which seems to serve as the "flagship" of all . . . Back in 1968, Armando Galan and his wife Joyce bought a little grocery store on the corner of Vernor and Clarkdale (a block north of Clark) ... and turned it into a carry-out operation with counter plus 11 stools .. . They had originally opened a Mexican res- taurant in 1965 on Vernor and Fisher Freeway . . . after Armando left the London Chop House .. . He had started there as a busboy and within three months, the late Les Gruber insisted that Ar- mando be made one of his fine waiters. The little carry-out owned by Armando and Joyce soon outgrew itself . . . the building next door was bought and seating made for 65 more . . . then came the building next to it . . . and Armando's had in- creased still another 65. There's parking in the rear, where people can enter . . . or in the front, with og- lers looking about the origi- nal Armando's which is still a carry-out . . . but without seats . . . and much more lavish . . . showcase with shellfish galore . . . another with French (that's correct, French) pastries made on the premises by Lori Marka, formerly of Restaurant such very Duglass ultra- sumptuous, delicious-looking delights that seemingly warn people to leave room for one of them. A double swinging door separates Armando's carry-out from his wonder- ful restaurant . . . Push the doors and you enter the likes of another world .. . with seating in high-backed padded chairs or still an- other small room with high padded soft booths . . . and an area for dancing .. . where the very fine Carlos Andres has come direct from Mexico to entertain on Armando's piano, Wednes- day through Sunday, 9 p.m. til 2 a.m. Waitresses like Evelyn Aldape are a joy . . . Her ef- ficiency, courteous ways, pleasantness and im- mediate attentiveness .. . coupled with a winning smile ... made the evening most enjoyable. There were six of us .. . Evelyn brought pitchers of Margaritas and Sangrias . . . made with fresh fruit .. . warm tostadas (and it's so important that they be warm) . . . guacamole . . and appetizer of Cam- pachana (Pico de Guio — tomatoes, jalapenos, onions, salt, pepper, garlic, cilantro, mixed in a special tomato sauce with shrimp and av- ocado). Armando can go into the kitchen and make every- thing on his large extensive menu . . . He is an ex- tremely talented man .. . hard-working . . . someone known for doing things from the heart . . . whose life is in his business. As an outside man, walk- ing about greeting people, Armando has very few equals . . . and it is highly delightful to know he won't run anymore restaurants where his presence isn't seen by customers coming in looking for him . . . Ar- mando's on Vernor and Clarkdale is the only spot for him now . . . and he is always there saying hello and goodbye with pleasant graciousness. Joyce was in the kitchen while we were there . . . and her prowess as a chef is with very high calibre because of such authenticity. Evelyn brought us four new specials . . . Armando's Seafood Fiesta (shrimp, mussels, clams, monkfish and crablegs, simmered in a spicy tomato sauce and poured over rice) . . . Carne Asada (skirt steak mari- nated in a special wine sauce, served with fried on- ions, guacamole, stuffed with spinach, broiled and covered with melted cheese). Like I said, if possible leave some room for a lu- scious piece of Lori's pas- tries . . . Evelyn brought a most tempting tray, and though sinful as it was, most of those at our table couldn't resist the utter temptations . . . I had apple pie with caramel glaze .. . and tasted a couple of other dessert elegantes. The authentic Mexican food prepared by Joyce was superb . . . not too hot (al- though you can have it any way desired) and excel- lently flavored to bring out tastebud goodness, indeed. Armando's is open seven days a week . Sunday-Thursday, 10:30 a.m. to 3 a.m. . .. Friday and Saturday til 4 a.m... . In about a month, he'll have the only authentic Mexican buffet ... with about 200 Mexican dishes spread over a period of time . . . each day of the week featuring at least 15 delicacies ... It'll be open for lunch Monday- Friday, 10:30 to 3, $4.39 . . . and dinner Monday and Tuesday, 5 to 10, all- you-can-eat, $5.95. There's much to Arman- do's ... It is real authentic- ity in a very pleasant at- mosphere . . . The food is outstanding ... service couldn't be better . . . and Armando's Mexican Res- taurant also has that extra prime ingredient . . . true character . . . resulting in a (Continued on Page 31)
