professor of Judaic studies

gion at Barnard College. He
is now associate professor of
Bible at the New York
School of the Hebrew Union
College-Jewish Institute of
Religion.
Dr. Sperling has con-
tributed widely to schol-
arly journals as well as to
the "Interpreter's Dictio-
nary of the Bible" and the
Encyclopedia Judaica.
Among his recent publi-
cations are "A Hand-
book of Ancient Hebrew
Letters" (written in col-
laboration with Dr. De-
nnis Pardee), a study of
an ancient hymn to the
goddess Ishtar and a new
translation of a Phoeni-
cian text with biblical
parallels.
The theme for the
weekend is "The Gods of
Our Fathers."

Eduard's father Leonid is
a mechanical engineer, and
his mother, Bella, is an oil
and gas engineer. Both par-
ents speak English, but to
date efforts to make contact
with them have not been
successful. The Dokses live
in Vinnista in the Ukraine.
Heads Educators
NEW YORK — Rabbi
Armin H. Friedman, prin-
cipal of the Hebrew
Academy of Long Beach,
N.Y., has been elected
president of the Educators
Council of America, a group
of Orthodox educators.
Film Series at Adat Shalom
The Adat Shalom Adult
Study Commission will kick
off its second annual "film
series, "Europe: Before,
During and After the
Holocaust," at 7 p.m. Sun-
day in the synagogue youth
lounge.
Sunday's feature will be
"The Dybbuk." On Jan. 15,
the featured film will be
"Me and the Colonel." The
final film in the series will
be "Mr. Klein."
Dan Greenberg, Eccen-
tric newspaper film critic
and a film instructor at
Oakland Community Col-
lege's Orchard Ridge cam-
pus, will introduce the films
and comment.
The public is invited free
of charge. Refreshments
will be available. For in-
