ran into a candle-lighting
snafu during an extended
stay at Harper Hospital in
Detroit's Medical Center.
Rosenberg had entered
the hospital on Nov. 15 and
had planned to use the men-
ora supplied by Rabbi.
Moshe Polter of Chabad
Lubavitch during his stay.
He envisioned no problems
with hospital adminis-
trators, who had gone out of
their way to see that Rosen-
berg, who is religiously ob-
servant, received kosher
meals from an outside ca-
terer while hospitalized.
Minutes after lighting
the shammas and the first
candle on Nov. 30, a nurse
appeared in Rosenberg's
room, admonished him
for creating a fire hazard,
and ordered that the
flames be extinguished._
After explaining the sig-
nificance of the menora,
Rosenberg asked the
nurse if it would be
possible to move the
lighted candleholder to a
safer location. He
suggested the reception
desk on his floor, where
everyone could view the
menora. The nurse
agreed and transfered
the candles.
Later that evening how-
ever, the head nurse on the
floor returned the menora to
Rosenberg's room again or-
dering that the candles be
extinguished because they
constituted a fire hazard.
On Dec. 1, the first full
day of Hanuka, Rosenberg
contacted Jerry Lee, the
hospital ombudsman, to
voice his disappointment
over the incident and to see
if anything could be done.
Lee, following talks with
Harper Hospital Chaplains
Dirk Evans (Protestant)
and Sister Sheila Hammond
(Catholic), obtained per-
mission from the hospital
administration for Rosen-
berg to preside over the
lighting of the menora in his
room for the seven remain-
ing nights of the holiday.
Each night, the two chap-
lains attended the candle-
lighting.
Rosenberg was released
from the hospital on Dec. 27
and hopes to spend next .
Hanuka at home in South-
field. But he will always
remember the Hanuka of
1983, when the menora
burned for seven nights in-
stead of eight.
