laureate of Hebrew poetry,
Haim Nachman Bialik and
his colleagues initiated a
movement uniting all those
individuals concerned to
broaden and deepen knowl-
edge of Hebrew. (Today, the
Jerusalem-based organiza-

World Zionist Organiza-

Tirza Gur Arie, deputy
director of the union, ex-
plained that these new pro-
grams which are broadcast
on short wave to the U.S.,
South America, Russia and
Europe, are aimed at listen-
ers who already know He-

NEW YORK — Almost
700 members of the Na-
tional Council of Jewish
Women (NCJW) are ex-
pected to attend the 1984
Joint Program Institute to
learn advocacy skills and
the legislative process.
Theme Of the four-day
educational conference is
social policy and the
economy. The event will be
held Jan. 30-Feb. 2 at the
Mayflower Hotel in Wash-
ington, D.C.
cast on Sundays and
Wednesdays, and the
15-minute "Milestones"
programs which go out
on Mondays and Thurs-
days, aim to give listeners
abroad "glimpses of life
in Israel." "Milestones"
strives to give some depth
to the subject under dis-
cussion --- an exploratory
program which is totally
different from a conven-
tional Hebrew lesson.
So from the small, quiet
studio in Jerusalem's sub-
urb of Bet Hakerem, two
voices talk about exploring
the paths and tiny shops of
the newly re-constructed
"Cardo" in the Jewish quar-
ter of the Old City of
Jerusalem. One of the
broadcasters is a profes-
sional actor, the other is an
olah hadasha (new immig-
rant).

Film Center Given Grant
WALTHAM, Mass. (JTA)
— A challenge grant of
$125,000 has been awarded
to the National Center for
Jewish Film by the Na-
tional Endowment for the
Humanities.
Arnold Picker, chairman
of the board of the film cen-
ter, said the center was a
unique archive and library
created in 1976 to preserve
the pictorial records — both
film and still photographs
— of the Jewish experience.
Located on the campus of
Brandeis University, the
film center 'must raise
within the next three years
matching funds on a one-
to-three basis — for a total
of $750,000 — to qualify for
the grant.
Sharon Rivo, executive
director said the film cen-
ter's collection currently
contains the largest collec-
tion of. Yiddish language
feature films in existence,
and a substantial collection
of materials on East Euro-
pean Jewry, Nazi prop-
aganda, the Holocaust,

Aid Exchange
JERUSALEM (ZINS) —
Some Israeli analysts be-
lieve that the United States
will help alleviate Israel's
economic crisis in exchange
for taking over the U.S.
Marine role in Lebanon.
The newspaper Al
Hamishmar warns that
U.S. economic aid could be-
come a "whip" for Israel.
