Year of Bible Suit Dismissed

LOS ANGELES — The
proclamation by President
Reagan which made 1983
the Year of the Bible did not
infringe on the freedom of
religion guaranteed in the
Constitution, according to
U.S. District Judge Manuel
Real.
Judge Real, in a decision
reached late last month,
dismissed the suit against
the proclamation filed by
the American Civil Liber-
ties Union (ACLU) on be-
half of 16 plaintiffs. The
ACLU lawsuit charged that
the Presidential action,
signed last Feb. 3 at the re-
quest of Congress, illegally

recognized Christianity as
the official religion of the
nation and gave it "God's
imprimatur," or stamp of
approval.
