(JTA) - Brown University,
one of the leading Ivy
League institutions in the
country, has become one of
the first, if not the first, col-
leges to have its two top fea-
tured sports, basketball and
football, headed by Jews.
Brown University has
announced the appointment
of John Rosenberg as head
football coach. The univer-
sity's basketball team is
headed by Mike Cingiser.
Rosenberg has a long and
varied career as a mentor on
the gridiron. Prior to corn-
ing to Brown, he was with
the Philadelphia Stars of
the U.S. Football League for
whom he served, last year,
as defensive-back field coor-
dinator. Previously, he was
an assistant coach for one
year at Harvard University
and for two years at the
University of Pittsburgh.
Rosenberg also served
two terms as an assistant
at Pennsylvania State
College and then went to
Villanova in Philadel-
phia for two gridiron sea-
sons. He subsequently re-
turned to Penn State and
remained there from 1974
to 1982, after which he
joined the Philadelphia
Stars.
Cingiser is in his second
year at Brown. Prior to that
he coached for 10 years at
Lynbrook High School in
Long Island. A graduate of
Brown University, Cingiser
was a member of the U.S.
Maccabia team which won
the international cham-
pionship in the 1965 games
in Israel.

Committee Finds
Drug Problem
Among Israelis

JERUSALEM (JTA) -
Drug addiction is high in Is-
rael and there is a co-
relation between drug
usage and social circum-
stances, according to the
findings of a public commit-
tee which has been studying
the problem since 1978.
Prof. Kalman Mann,
chairman of the committee,
Tuesday said there are
some 4,000-6,000 addicts in
Israel. About 50 percent of
underprivileged youths use
drugs compared to 3-5 per-
cent of users among youths
who are students or gain-
fully employed, the study
found.
Mann said drug addiction
in Israel is not of epidemic
proportions but it could
spread and therefore the
seriousness of the problem
should not be underesti-
mated.
