In his letter to the Nobel
Committee in Oslo, Nor-
way, Cohen said, "Mr.
Wiesel has demonstrated
courage and commitment in
his efforts to draw world at-
tention to the horrors of
genocide. His contribution
to the cause of peace in the
international community is
immeasurable."
Cohen noted that Wiesel
had worked tirelessly for
more than 20 years to raise
the public consciousness
about the Holocaust and to
ensure- that the lessons of
that terrible time are never
forgotten. This effort,
Cohen said, gained promi-
nence in the past year with
the formation of the Na-
tional Commission on the
Holocaust, of which Wiesel
is chairman. The commis-
sion has recently completed
its initial deliberations and
has selected the site and
form for a National
Holocaust Memorial."
