Passions Cool on Mexican's Statement

NEW YORK — Passions
in Mexico's Jewish commu-
nity, roused by a vicious
anti-Semitic diatribe in the
nation's Chamber of De-
puties, have been quieted by
the condemnation and re-
pudiation of the statement
by government authorities,
according to the Anti-
Defamation League of Bnai
Brith.
The ADL quoted Mexican
Jewish leaders as being
satisfied that the "outrage-
ous anti-Semitic speech" by
Miguel Olea Enriquez, the
deputy from Chihuahua, is
"an isolated example of
bigotry and does not repre-
sent the views of the gov-
ernment or the Partido Re-
volucionaria Institucional
(PRI), his political party."
The anti-Semitic remarks
by Olea Enriquez were
made in the midst of a gen-
eral debate in the chamber

Dec. 1 on stiffer penalties
for violators of currency
control measures. While the
deputies denounced the
widespread violations by
many industrialists, Olea
Enriquez singled out Jews
as "experts in such mat-
ters."
Torenberg,
Julio
president of Tribuna Is-
raelita, the Jewish com-
munity's human rela-
tions agency, told ADL
that the Jewish commu-
nity was pleased that all
the members of the PRI
majority in the chamber
joined Leopoldo Enrique
Soto • Izquierdo, the
party's secretary, in a
statement of repudiation.
The statement, he noted,
emphasized that
Enriquez' remarks were
"racist and contrary to
Mexican law and tradi-
tion."

TEL AVIV — Women

lished pick-up points be-
cause of recent sexual at-
tacks on women soldiers.

Mauricio
Lulka,
president of the Bnai Brith
Human Relations Commis-
sion in Mexico, reported
that in a meeting with
Jewish leaders, Manuel
Bartlett Diaz, secretary of
Gobernacion, and senior
minister in the president's
cabinet, had communicated
the disavowal of anti-
Semitism by President .
Miguel de la Madrid and his
assurance that the Jewish
community has nothing to
worry about.
In summing up the mat-
ter, Messrs. Torenberg and
Lulka said that their organ-
izations and the Comae
Central Israelita, the
Jewish community's central
communal agency, would
like to put a lid on the mat-
ter because Mexico's execu-
tive and legislative officials
"have clearly demonstrated
the traditional Mexican re-
spect for minority and
human rights."
Last week, officials of the
Simon Wiesenthal Center
at Yeshiva University in
Los Angeles met with Mexi-
can Ambassador De Los
Reyes and urged that De La
Madrid repudiate
Enriquez's statement. They
were told that the Mexican
president would soon meet
with representatives of
Mexico's Jewish commu-

nity.
The American Jewish
Committee sent De Los
Reyes a telegram protesting
the statement by Olea
Enriquez.
