Danny Raskin's
Theater on Woodward be-
tween Alexandrine and
Willis will have a heap of
nostalgia surrounding them
when visiting the Gnome
Restaurant . . . They'll be
sitting in the lobby area of a
theater where Harry
Houdini, for example,
played his final perform-
ance.
The restaurant opened in
June 1978 as Vernor's
Gnome since it was across
the street from this famous
beverage plant . . . But the
name couldn't be used be-
cause Vernor's didn't want
to be associated with alco-
holic substances . . . So
came just The Gnome . . .
considered among the best
places for Mideastern and
Lebanese food . . . However,
don't take away from its
American fare . . . not with
Chef Arthur Callaway,
formerly of The Golden Lion
. . . preparing fresh catches
of the day, baby frog legs,
shrimp, steaks, beef kebob,
etc.
It seats 104 with tables
and booths (before remodel-
ing, seating was for only 50)
and is owned by
enterprising Joe Zainea,
who is also boss of the bowl-
ing alley next door which
his dad, Albert Zainea,
bought when Joe was only
10 years old.
The former Majestic
Theater is quite a Zainea
complex now ... The
Gnome restaurant, 28-
lane Garden Bowl (sec-
ond oldest bowling cen-
ter in the United States,
since 1913 ... Other one
in Milwaukee is like a
museum . . . used only for
special activities) ...
Then there's a trophy
manufacturing shop (De-
troit Trophy Co.) where
over 100,000 are made
yearly ... for every type
of occasion ... plaques
too ... and Joe boasts
that his prices are so low
because everything is
done right there.
Also a silk screen shop
and place to letter shirts .. .
This isn't all . . . Joe even
constructs bowling alleys
and resurfaces lanes too.
I had an enjoyable lunch
there recently . . . Taboolee,
hommus, baba ganoush
(egg plant) Fatoosh (spicy
salad, sometimes too spicy,
like this time,) Leban
(yogurt) and cucumbers,
combination plate of Mid-
east goodies including shish
kebob made from baby lamb
tenderloin, not leg of lamb;
baked kibbee, shish kafta,
grape leaves, rice pilaf, stuf-
fed squash and a side order
of stuffed cabbage Mideast
style . . . and one of the
Gnome's specialties, rice
pudding with such wonder-
ful consistency, plenty of
walnuts and rose water .. .
Naturally pita bread .. .
and then our pleasant, per-
sonable waitress, Sally
Schluter, came by with a
tray of yummy-looking pas-
tries . . . I tried the Bird's
Nest with pecans and can
still taste its goodness.
Friday and Saturday eves
at The Gnome are for music
lovers too . . . The Harold
McKinney piano and bass
duo ends in December .. .
and January begins with
trio of pianist Charles
Boles, with flute and bass.
Sunday at The Gnome
is brunch with the
classics, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
... It's a Mideast feast
with music that changes
each week ... brass quin-
tet, string quartet or bas-
soon quartet, the latter
beginning Jan. 8.
Vicky Moussa, head
Lebanese cook during days, •
has been at The Gnome
since it opened .. , Rachel
