NEW YORK (JTA) —
The Rev. Jesse Jackson, the
black leader who is seeking
the nomination of the
Democratic Party for the
Presidency, said that
America has an interest in
protecting Israel's right to
exist but the Palestinians
also have a right to self-
determination and a home-

land. He said he supports an
American dialogue with the
Palestine Liberation
Organization.
In an interview published
in Wednesday's New York
Times, Jackson said:
"America has an interest in
protecting Israel's right to
exist in security within in-
ternationally recognized
boundaries. America also
has an interest in Palesti-
nian justice, or self-
determination, or a home-
land for Palestinian people.
The more nomadic and des-
perate the Palestinians are,
the more tension is put upon
Israel."

Jackson said that the
U.S. "also has an interest
in the non-partitioning
and territorial integrity
of Lebanon and in keep-
ing normalized ties with
all Arab nations."

As for the PLO Jackson
said that "America should
use its influence to get the
PLO and others" to recog-
nize Israel and bring Israeli
leaders to recognize the
PLO. He said he is con-
vinced that forces like Peace
Now and the Labor Party in
Israel will go along with a
policy of mutal recognition
of the PLO.

Success is due less to abil-
ity than to zeal.
