Hussein Fears Superpowers
PARIS (JTA) — King
Hussein of Jordan told the
Parliament of Europe in
Strassbourg last week that
the new agreements re-
cently concluded between
the U.S. and Israel
threatened to make the
Middle East the scene of a
superpowers confrontation
and urged the Europeans to
"_play a positive role to help
defuse an explosive situa-
tion."
According to the Jorda-
nian monarch, the U.S.-
Israel agreements have
"created a new situation in
the region. The danger is no
longer that of local or
limited clashes between the
Syrians, the Israelis and the
PLO but of a possible con-
frontation between the two
superpowers that could in-
volve the use of deadly
weapons."
TEL AVIV (JTA) — With
Israel's main ports
paralyzed by strikes and
work slowdowns, the busi-
ness community, govern-
ment representatives and
the ports authorities agreed
Tuesday to create a special
fund to finance the ships-
ment of Israeli import and
export cargoes by air.
The move, taken in coop-
eration with the Finance
Ministry, is intended to cut
the severe losses incurred
by the inability of ships to
load or off-load cargoes at
Haifa and Ashdod. The
strike by longshoremen for
higher wages has resulted
in millions of dollars worth
of perishables rotting at the
docks.
Shipowners, reluctant to
send their vessels into ports
where they may be forced to
lie at anchor for weeks, have
dumped Israel-bound car-
goes at Larnaca in Cyprus
and Pireaus in Greece. Ex-
porters have sustained
heavy losses because they
are unable to ship citrus,
vegetables and flowers to
European markets.
The parokhet, or covering
for the holy ark, is first re-
ferred to in Exodus 40:21,
where Moses "brought the
ark into the tabernacle and
set up the curtain and
screened the ark."
